My Stolen Planet

A film by Farahnaz Sharifi. In Farsi with German subtitles.

[Credits] [Tickets & Termine] [Trailer]

My Stolen Planet is a diary-style narrative by Farah, an Iranian filmmaker. Born during the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, she captures moments of joy and defiance in her daily life, navigating the contrast between domestic freedom and external oppression. Simultaneously, she collects 8mm archives from people she doesn’t know. Relying on these recordings from other people, she gains a new perspective on losing memories. Her connection with Leyla, an Iranian professor who left Iran during the revolution, adds a name and a story to one of the faces in her archive. Farah’s mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, motivates her to continue her fight against forgetting. In the autumn of 2022, the Women, Life, Freedom uprising becomes a turning point in Farah’s life, as well as in the lives of many others in Iran. This is a homemade history.

Favoriten

A film by Ruth Beckermann. In German with English subtitles.

[Credits] [Tickets & Termine] [Trailer]

Beid, Hafsa, Melissa, Manessa, Mohammad… 25 children and their dedicated teacher. We wanted to find out who they are and become familiar with their skills and strategies, their joys, fears and hardships,” says director Ruth Beckermann. More than 60 percent of all children in Viennese primary schools do not speak German as their first language. At the same time, there is an acute shortage of teachers and supervisors. Such adverse conditions are the starting point of Ruth Beckermann’s documentary Favoriten, for which the Austrian filmmaker of The Waldheim Waltz and Mutzenbacher followed a Viennese primary school class for three years. The result is an astonishingly cheerful portrait of an unusual community. A film about teaching and learning and the often very surprising experiences somewhere in between.

Korntal

Die Kinder aus Korntal

A film by Julia Charakter. Starts September 26th at the fsk. In German with English subtitles.

[Credits] [Tickets & Termine] [Trailer]

In Korntal, a small town of 9,000 souls in Baden-Württemberg, hundreds of children were abused in the homes of the Evangelical Brethren since the 1950s. Forced labour, physical punishment and sexualised violence were the order of the day. To date, more than 150 former children have broken their silence, more than 80 perpetrators have been identified. Because the latter covered for each other and the neighbours looked away, the children were defenceless against the abuse for decades. When the scandal was exposed in 2013, the community and the village were hostile at first: That which must not be cannot be. It was only when the pressure from the outside grew that the community initiated a process of dealing with the scandal. But it is controversial: victims are re-traumatised, their statements doubted. To this day the children from Korntal are fighting for investigation and compensation.

The film focuses on the victims and avoids all dramatisation. What happened was dramatic enough, after all. When testimonies are only played as audio-recordings to protect the speakers, a simple animation fills the visual gaps. When those responsible today speak, the camera stays restrained and does not judge. That is not necessary anyway, because the inconceivable relativisation of the crimes speaks loudly enough – in Korntal as elsewhere.
