Walchensee Forever

a film by Janna Ji Wonders. Starts October 21st at the fsk. In German & English with German subtitles.

[Credits] [Termine] [Trailer]

Director Janna Ji Wonders tells the story of the women in her family over the last century. The film’s unifying element and silent chronicler is Lake Walchensee in Bavaria, where the family opened a café in 1920 which still exists today. Its impressive founder Apa bequeaths the business to her first-born Norma who continues to run it, even in her advancing years. Norma’s daughters Anna and Frauke leave the lake to liberate themselves and travel the world as musicians – only to return to live in a commune set up by Rainer Langhans. Frauke pines for the love of her life, dies mysteriously and becomes a shadowy figure for those left behind. Restless Anna moves to the USA, where she unexpectedly falls pregnant and gives birth to a girl. Summoned by the shadows of her past, she returns with daughter Janna to Walchensee where Grandma Norma becomes an important figure for her granddaughter. Filmmaker Janna is searching for answers to questions like: What is the meaning of home? To what extent am I shaped by my origins? What really counts in the end? She finds clues in the bond between four generations of women and their very different approaches to life.

Online für Anfänger

a film by Benoît Delépine & Gustave Kervern. Starts October 28th at the fsk. In French with German subtitles.

[Credits] [Termine] [Trailer]

In a provincial suburb, three neighbours come to terms with the consequences of the new world of social media. Marie, who lives off her husband’s family allowance, is afraid of losing her son’s respect because of a sex tape. Bertrand can’t say no to advertising calls and is fighting to protect his daughter, who is being bullied online. Christine, after losing everything because of her addiction to TV series, wonders why her rating as an Uber driver is not taking off. These three lone fighters are incapable of finding a solution to their problems on their own – until they join forces to declare war on the tech giants. Ostensibly a sitcom, Effacer l’historique captures our 21st century reality in a way few other films have: there is neither history nor are there stories, neither left-wing nor right. Instead of a physical boss who enforces our obedience, an invisible, data-spewing cloud controls us and devours our identities. This third Berlinale film by Delépine and Kervern is an empathetic tribute to those who are “left behind”, who hold up a mirror to us all and our perceptions of reality.

Le prince

a film by Lisa Bierwirth. In German, French, English and Lingala with German subtitles.

[Credits] [Termine] [Trailer]

In the midst of the notorious Frankfurter Bahnhofsviertel, two people encounter who could not be more different: Monika, mid-40s, works as a curator and is therefore part of the city’s art- and culture scene. As she unexpectedly gets into a police raid, she encounters Joseph, a Congolese businessman looking for investors for a diamond mine in Congo and who keeps afloat by doing some Import/Export-deals every now and then. Eventually, their brief encounter results in an intense love story. But while both of them believe their relationship to be strong enough to stand against the influence of prejudices, mistrust slowly arises between the two of them, until their relationship becomes a battleground of postcolonial conflicts. Eventually, they will have to ask themselves if it’s actually possible, to love at eye level?

Inspired by the true story of her mother, Lisa Bierwirth questions how postcolonial structures and power relations can take influence in an European-African relationship. The story of her feature debut observes not only the pitfalls, but also the courage it takes to live a love life drawn between social conventions and exhibits Frankfurt am Main – somewhere between a world metropolis and a place of shady business deals – as the film’s ambiguous third protagonist.

Atomkraft Forever

a film by Carsten Rau. In German.

[Credits] [Tickets & Termine] [Trailer]

Germany is turning away from nuclear power once and for all in 2022. The risk is too high, the technology unmanageable. Yet the nuclear nightmare goes on: with umpteen thousands of tonnes of radioactive waste, the storage of which isn’t the least bit clear; with the hazardous dismantling of power plants which will take decades and gobble up many billions of euros; and with neighbours who firmly hold on to mankind’s dream of atomic energy – 13 of the 27 nations in the EU operate nuclear power plants and the development thereof continues.
The feature-length documentary film Atomkraft Forever by Carsten Rau takes a profound as well as alarming look at the nuclear nightmare. In grand scenes unprecedentedly portrayed, and in six interwoven episodes: about the absurd amount of effort involved in demolishing a gigantic nuclear power plant; about the quest for a final repository that is supposed to weather a million years and the next ten ice ages; into the heart of the French atomic industry that ridicules the German opt-out as “ludicrous” and wants even more power plants.
Atomkraft Forever doesn’t leave any arguments out, even though they may be unpopular. In the end, the viewer can and must form their own impression of the mania called nuclear power. That has no end.
