An extraordinary artist gets an extraordinary documentary: “BROKEN ENGLISH”, about and featuring the musician and actress Marianne Faithfull, playfully blends documentary, biopic and staged performance, just as the British artistic duo Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard did in “20,000 Days on Earth” and “Nick Cave”.
The fictional “Ministry of Not Forgetting”, headed by Tilda Swinton, offers the singer Marianne Faithfull the chance to edit everything relating to her rich and eventful life story herself for the archives. In the role of the interviewer, George MacKay (1917, Sense and Sensibility) goes through all the material he could find about the pop icon with her. This gives Marianne Faithfull the opportunity to speak for herself about the artistic persona created for her by the press. With great composure, this exceptional artist – who for many years was perceived by the press solely as Mick Jagger’s girlfriend – looks back on her life. Songs she has written, reinterpreted by singers such as Jehnny Beth and Courtney Love, and occasional interviews round off the concept, right up to her most recent performance alongside Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
