A remote village on a Norwegian fjord: this is where the deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian Gheorghiu family ventures to make a fresh start. They quickly settle in, and the children make friends with those of the neighbouring family. But when teachers discover bruises on the eldest daughter, the family comes under scrutiny from the authorities. In a society where the welfare of children is the top priority, differing notions of family, care and responsibility clash.

With Fjord, Cristian Mungiu has created an extraordinary drama. Following his triumph at Cannes with 4 Monate, 3 Wochen und 2 Tage (2007), he has now won his second Palme d’Or. This tense and deeply human work about integration, trust and the invisible fault lines within a community captivates with its precise direction and outstanding performances. The lead roles are played by Oscar-nominated actors Sebastian Stan (A Different Man, The Apprentice) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value, Backrooms).
