Set bet­ween Paris, Prague, Nuremberg, Manchester, the Polish coun­try­si­de and the Roman sea­si­de, NICO, 1988 is a road-movie dedi­ca­ted to the last years of Christa Päffgen, known by her stage name “Nico”. One of Warhol’s muses, sin­ger of The Velvet Underground and a woman of legen­da­ry beau­ty, Nico lived a second life after the sto­ry known to all, when she began her care­er as a solo artist. NICO, 1988 is the sto­ry of Nico’s last tours with the band that accom­pa­nied her around Europe in the 80s: years in which the “priest­ess of dark­ness”, as she was cal­led, found hers­elf again, shaking off the weight of her beau­ty and rebuil­ding the rela­ti­onship with her only for­got­ten son. It is the sto­ry of a rebirth, of an artist, of a mother, of the woman bey­ond the icon.

Tempelhof Airport in Berlin is Europe’s lar­gest heri­ta­ge buil­ding. It beca­me a sym­bol of both National Socialist self-aggran­di­se­ment as well as of free­dom during the air­lift of 1948 – 49. Since autumn 2015 seve­ral han­gars have been pro­vi­ding tem­po­ra­ry shel­ter for refu­gees. Like the other 2,000 peo­p­le here who have fled their home­land, Ibrahim from Syria and Qutaiba from Iraq dream of being able to make a new start. Full of hope, they work with trans­la­tors, doc­tors, lan­guage tea­chers and job agents to prepa­re for life in their new German home. The lack of pri­va­te space and com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on and admi­nis­tra­ti­ve bar­riers are some of the chal­lenges they face while, on the near­by recrea­ti­on area of Tempelhofer Feld, Berliners and tou­rists escape their dai­ly rou­ti­ne. Chaos and harm­o­ny: two very dif­fe­rent worlds in one place.
Karim Aïnouz spent a year fol­lo­wing the­se men in search of a place they can call home. The film’s sen­si­ti­ve and well-com­po­sed images cap­tu­re their lives that are shaped by uncer­tain­ty, stress and angu­ish, but also jol­li­ty and aspi­ra­ti­ons. The building’s archi­tec­tu­re and the chan­ging sea­sons add a sur­re­al dimen­si­on. A por­trait of a city within a city that is also a snapshot of Europe caught bet­ween uto­pia and crisis.

Zama, an offi­cer of the Spanish Crown born in South America, waits for a let­ter from the King gran­ting him a trans­fer from the town in which he is sta­gna­ting, to a bet­ter place. His situa­ti­on is deli­ca­te. He must ensu­re that not­hing overs­ha­dows his trans­fer. He is forced to accept sub­mis­si­ve­ly every task ent­rus­ted to him by suc­ces­si­ve Governors who come and go as he stays behind. The years go by and the let­ter from the King never arri­ves. When Zama noti­ces ever­y­thing is lost, he joins a par­ty of sol­diers that go after a dan­ge­rous bandit.

Und die Beziehung zu sei­nem puber­tä­ren Sohn wird durch den neu­en Job auch nicht einfacher.

Die fas­zi­nie­ren­de wie berüh­ren­de spiel­film­na­he Doku erzählt, wie Kindern und Jugendlichen aus pre­kä­ren Verhältnissen mit Musik gehol­fen wird, ihr Leben in den Griff zu krie­gen. Die Brüder Arash und Arman T. Riahi haben eini­ge von ihnen ein Jahr lang beim Musizieren beglei­tet. “Goulash?,” the young woman loo­king out of the hatch of a com­bi­ned hot dog and piz­za stand on the side of the win­dy Kolyma rou­te asks again. No, Stanislaw Mucha did ask for “Gulag”. And he is asto­nis­hed to find that here, whe­re the Soviet penal and labour camp sys­tem shaped the natu­ral and living envi­ron­ment for deca­des, the term isn’t com­mon­ly used. Actually, for all intents and pur­po­ses, the filmmaker’s jour­ney seems to be more of a trip through word­scapes. It beg­ins in Magadan Bay, which ear­ned its nick­na­me “gate to hell” as the port of ent­ry for the forced labou­rers. It con­ti­nues along the “lon­gest gra­vey­ard in the world”, as the long distance road from the Sea of Okhotsk to Yakutsk is occa­sio­nal­ly cal­led. But it also cros­ses the paths of the living, tho­se who stay­ed here or were born here, who more often than not have bet­ter things to do than to revol­ve around that geni­us loci. Encounters as inspi­ring elec­tric dischar­ges on the hori­zon of expec­ta­ti­ons – like tho­se elec­tric pul­ses an ama­teur phy­si­ci­an picked up along the way wants to use to reju­ve­na­te his old father.

When the pre­sent over­wri­tes the past, when the Putin era super­im­po­ses the Soviet era, when the eter­nal peri­phery is allo­wed to actively par­ti­ci­pa­te in the snapshots made of it, the result are bone dry punch lines: for exam­p­le that slow moti­on pop music video Mucha tre­ats a girls’ dancing trou­pe to as he dri­ves by.
