In Chad’s Ennedi Desert, ancient mountains rise from the sand. They preserve the memory of a forgotten past and tell age-old legends.
Kellou, a young woman from a nearby village, is haunted by mysterious visions that set her apart from those around her and that she herself does not understand. Her world changes the day she meets Aya, an outcast in her forties who lives on the edge of the village. Aya knows that Kellou possesses a special gift: she was the midwife present at Kellou’s birth, when her mother died after speaking her final words. As the village community turns against the growing bond between the two women, Kellou must carry out one final task for Aya: to preserve the mystical, pantheistic world they share, where the visible and invisible merge into one another, a world whose disappearance Aya fears.
SOUMSOUM, LA NUIT DES ASTRES celebrated its international premiere in the competition section at the 2026 Berlinale.
