Martin Parr is regarded as one of the most controversial photographers of his time. His images often have the power to both amuse us and make us feel slightly uneasy, caught between laughter and the uncomfortable realisation that we recognise ourselves in his uncompromising portrait of consumer society.

Although he is now celebrated, collected and exhibited worldwide, Parr’s early works found little audience and were heavily criticised for trivialising the working class. In hindsight, however, he may simply have observed what we often overlook – and brought it into the spotlight as an important topic for discussion. ‘I Am Martin Parr’ is the portrait of an extraordinary photographer who revolutionised contemporary photography by inventing a political, humanistic and accessible photographic language.
