In November, Forum & Friends VI will pre­sent films by Israeli artist Keren Cytter on two evenings at the fsk cine­ma: two short film pro­gram­mes and the fea­ture-length film THE WRONG MOVIE (USA, Belgium 2024), which pre­mie­red at the Berlinale Forum. Keren Cytter’s films are cha­rac­te­ri­sed by a deli­bera­te­ly arti­fi­ci­al artis­tic style, com­bi­ning nar­ra­ti­on with decon­s­truc­tion, linea­ri­ty with frag­men­ta­ti­on, figu­ra­ti­on with the absurd, rebel­li­on with fra­gi­li­ty, cool­ness with trips, punk with romance. The high­ly ori­gi­nal plots are com­ple­men­ted by an asso­cia­ti­ve play with form and medi­um, foils and gene­ric codes, from gen­re and cul­tu­ral histo­ry to indi­vi­du­al auteur signa­tures – a whirl­wind of film that draws us into the pre­sent moment as a vir­tu­al sta­te of being. Keren Cytter is a veri­ta­ble mul­ti­me­dia artist, working in the fields of dance and per­for­mance, video and film, poet­ry and the visu­al arts, espe­ci­al­ly dra­wing, and has writ­ten five novels and three child­ren’s books. A sel­ec­tion of her film and video works can now be seen in the pro­gram­mes cura­ted and mode­ra­ted by Christiane Büchner and Barbara Wurm, with Keren Cytter as a guest. (Barbara Wurm)

    Fifteen-year-old Leo has grown up in Germany wit­hout a father. When she dis­co­vers his iden­ti­ty, she imme­dia­te­ly sets out to track him down. She finds Paolo in a board­ed-up beach bar on the win­try coast of nor­t­hern Italy. The reuni­on lea­ves Paolo over­whel­med and con­flic­ted. After Leo’s sud­den appearance in his life, he strug­gles to balan­ce his rela­ti­onship bet­ween her and the fami­ly he has now. At first, Leo just wants ans­wers. But soon, she starts to long for a place in Paolo’s life. With no money nor plans, she stays on in the small town. As they spend more time tog­e­ther, Leo and Paolo ten­ta­tively begin to bond and dis­co­ver they have much in com­mon. But rea­li­ty ine­vi­ta­b­ly cat­ches up with them. When Paolo prio­ri­ti­ses his youn­ger daugh­ter over Leo again, the lat­ter is left hurt and angry. A con­fron­ta­ti­on lays bare their pain, appar­ent­ly shat­te­ring their fra­gi­le con­nec­tion. But, amid the turm­oil, father and daugh­ter begin to ack­now­ledge their respec­ti­ve truths and take a small but meaningful step towards acceptance.

    Ángela, a deaf woman, and Héctor, her hea­ring part­ner, are expec­ting a child. They are exci­ted about the pregnan­cy, alt­hough they do not yet know whe­ther the baby will be deaf or hea­ring. Despite both clai­ming they can hand­le wha­te­ver comes, their under­ly­ing con­cerns are evi­dent. After a com­pli­ca­ted and emo­tio­nal­ly inten­se labour, Ángela gives birth to their daugh­ter, but the pair will have to wait a cou­ple of months to learn if the baby is hea­ring or not. During this time, Héctor strug­gles to ful­ly grasp the chal­lenges Ángela is facing, while she must come to terms with rai­sing a daugh­ter who may not share her expe­ri­ence of the world. This jour­ney forces both of them to ques­ti­on their roles as part­ners and par­ents, as Ángela grapp­les with her iden­ti­ty in a socie­ty that does not ful­ly accept or under­stand her.

    I Am Gitxsan” fol­lows Phoenix Apperloo, a recent high school gra­dua­te recon­nec­ting with his Indigenous heri­ta­ge in Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada. Inspired by encoun­ters with resi­den­ti­al school sur­vi­vors, he wri­tes a heart­felt let­ter to Prime Minister Trudeau about the inju­s­ti­ces faced by his people.

    The docu­men­ta­ry high­lights the impact of colo­nia­lism on the Gitxsan com­mu­ni­ty, fea­turing insights from experts like Dr Gabor Maté and show­ca­sing their resi­li­ence through pro­tests and legal actions. It cul­mi­na­tes with a moving mes­sa­ge of hope and deter­mi­na­ti­on, empha­si­zing the power of the Gitxsan people’s endu­ring spi­rit, the beau­ties of their cul­tu­re, and their com­mit­ment to future generations.

    Written, direc­ted, and pro­du­ced by the mul­ti-award-win­ning film­ma­ker Hossein Martin Fazeli, I Am Gitxsan is a tes­ta­ment to the resi­li­ence of Indigenous com­mu­ni­ties in their batt­le to pre­ser­ve and pro­tect the best of our shared humanity.
