Mit einer unglaub­lich umfang­rei­chen Materialsammlung aus Film- und Fernsehbildern, Reportagen, mit geschicht­li­chem und geo­po­li­ti­schem Hintergrundẃissen gelingt dem Film eine Verdichtung der sechs Monate bis zu sei­ner Ermordung, in denen Patrice Lumumba der ers­te Präsident des unab­hän­gi­gen Kongo war. Die rasan­te Bild- und Tonmontage zeigt auf, wie bekann­te Größen des Jazz von der US-Regierung sei­ner­zeit zur Befriedung und Ablenkung benutzt wur­den, wie die Konzerte Louis Armstrongs in Kingshasa 1960. Ein beein­dru­cken­des und span­nen­des Werk, auf­wüh­lend und lei­der immer noch aktuell.

    A few months after his release from Auschwitz and still in his stri­ped jacket, Yechiel De-Nur sat down and star­ted wri­ting. After two weeks, he was reborn as Ka-Tzetnik, or “the man from the camps.” While the books that he wro­te were trans­la­ted into 32 lan­guages and sold mil­li­ons, the aut­hor hims­elf hid behind the pseud­onym. It wasn’t until the tri­al of Adolf Eichmann in 1961 that his true iden­ti­ty was reve­a­led during his reve­la­to­ry tes­tim­o­ny whe­re he descri­bed Auschwitz as “the other pla­net:” a place out­side of human judgment. Years later, under­go­ing an expe­ri­men­tal LSD tre­at­ment for trau­ma, he revi­sits his expe­ri­ence, ima­gi­ning hims­elf as an SS offi­cer, and that chan­ges ever­y­thing. In this affec­ting docu­men­ta­ry, the life of the mys­te­rious and elu­si­ve aut­hor and his views on human beha­vi­or are exami­ned in depth.

In the lone­so­me boat sai­ling through mys­ti­cal over­flowed land­scapes, they navi­ga­te the chal­lenges and dan­gers of adap­ting to this new world.

The event almost fai­led to hap­pen – befo­re a for­mi­da­ble German teen­ager, the 18-year-old Vera Brandes, pulls out all the stops and arran­ges the con­di­ti­ons for the crea­ti­on of a mas­ter­pie­ce. Vera, who is still at school when she starts pro­du­cing and pro­mo­ting con­certs in Cologne, puts ever­y­thing on the line to stage this show. It looks like all the odds are against her, but Vera belie­ves in the power of music and has never seen anyo­ne play in the way that Keith Jarrett plays.

    A girl roams through the city loo­king for a place to sleep. Along the way she meets young mothers who cele­bra­te mother­hood reli­gious­ly, goes home with an abs­ti­nent exis­ten­tia­list for whom sex is “just ano­ther mar­ket,” and waits for the end of capi­ta­lism in a drag bar. Her attempt to wri­te a book doesn’t make it bey­ond the first sen­tence of the second chap­ter, and she finds no space bet­ween art gal­le­ries, yoga stu­di­os and the beds of stran­gers. Instead of try­ing to fit in, she starts regar­ding her depres­si­on as a poli­ti­cal issue. Through 15 of the girl’s humo­rous encoun­ters, Aren’t You Happy? explo­res our post-modern socie­ty bet­ween pre­ca­ri­ty and self-mar­ke­ting, seri­al mono­ga­my and neo-spi­ri­tua­li­ty, dis­il­lu­sionment and the pres­su­re to be hap­py.
