A film by Quentin Dupieux. In French with English subtitles.
On August 1st at 8pm. English introduction by Gerrit Woltemath, TEDDY Award
Applying the same scrutiny and metatextual irony to cinema that he used to dissect the hypocrisies of the theatre world in YANNICK, Quentin Dupieux’s latest work is a film about making a (bad) film within a film, or something along those lines… LE DEUXIÈME ACTE follows four actors coming together to create a formulaic romantic comedy that most of them despise, with these scenes progressively intertwined with the film itself to form a mise en abyme that continually defies interpretation—and sometimes even logic. While featuring inventive plot twists reminiscent of Charlie Kaufman, Dupieux’s film is cruder and more overtly comedic. This ‘meta-comedy’ satirises everything from contemporary film production to the excesses of political correctness, from actors’ vanity to the many secrets and lies of the (French) entertainment industry. Léa Seydoux, Philippe Garrel, Vincent Lindon and the ever-intense and surprising Raphaël Quenard fully embrace the increasingly absurd situations their characters face, in a film that manages to be both subtle and gross, hilarious and unapologetically crude—all trademarks of Dupieux’s distinctive style.
