Zakopane in den Dreißigerjahren, hier leben die Góralen: Im südpolnischen Hochgebirge spricht man seine eigene Sprache, pflegt seine alpinen Traditionen und hält Abstand zu anderen – auch zu Polen. Hier finden zwei Familien zueinander, die durch strategische Heirat ihre Situation verbessern wollen. Aber wie so oft sind Liebe und Heirat zwei verschiedene Dinge – der ältere, besonnene Maciek soll die schöne Bronka heiraten, obwohl sie ein Verhältnis mit seinem jüngeren, ungestümen Bruder Jędrek hat und sogar ein Kind von ihm erwartet. Koszałka beschränkt sich nicht auf ein folkloristisches Kammerspiel um Liebe und Gehorsam.
