A father (Sergi López) and his son arri­ve at a rave deep in the moun­ta­ins of sou­thern Morocco. They’re sear­ching for Mar — daugh­ter and sis­ter — who vanis­hed months ago at one of the­se end­less, slee­p­less par­ties. Surrounded by elec­tro­nic music and a raw, unfa­mi­li­ar sen­se of free­dom, they hand out her pho­to again and again. Hope is fading but they push through and fol­low a group of ravers hea­ding to one last par­ty in the desert. As they ven­ture deeper into the bur­ning wil­der­ness, the jour­ney forces them to con­front their own limits.

    Nachdem der dik­ta­to­risch regie­ren­de bela­ru­si­sche Präsident Aljaksandr Lukaschenka erneut Wahlen gefälscht hat, bre­chen Proteste aus. Obwohl Lena vom Geheimdienst auf Schritt und Tritt ver­folgt wird, filmt die jun­ge, unab­hän­gi­ge Journalistin heim­lich Demonstrationen und ihre blu­ti­ge Niederschlagung. Kurz dar­auf wird sie selbst ver­haf­tet und ver­schwin­det zunächst spur­los.
    Ihr Mann, der oppo­si­tio­nel­le Intellektuelle Ilja, muss weit­ge­hend macht­los mit anse­hen, wie sei­ner Frau ein fai­rer Prozess ver­wei­gert wird. Vielmehr wird Lena wegen Staatsverrats ange­klagt und in ein Straflager ver­legt. Selbst eine ver­sier­te Anwältin kann ihr nicht wei­ter­hel­fen. Lena drängt ihren Mann, ins Ausland zu gehen, aber er hat Zweifel – kann er mög­li­cher­wei­se erfolg­rei­cher für sie und die gemein­sa­me Sache kämp­fen, wenn er in Belarus bleibt?
    Die in Minsk gebo­re­ne pol­nisch-bela­ru­si­sche Regisseurin Mara Tamkovich erzählt in ihrem Polit-Drama die Geschichte ihres Kurzfilms „Na żywo / Live“ (2022) wei­ter. Sie ver­ar­bei­tet dabei die wah­re Geschichte der bela­ru­si­schen Journalistin Kazjaryna Bachwalawa und zeigt anhand ihres Falls, wie sehr in einer Diktatur das Politische ins Private ein­dringt und Menschen zu Entscheidungen zwingt, bei denen es weder Richtig noch Falsch gibt.     The film tells the sto­ry of the 2020 racist attack in the city of Hanau in the German sta­te of Hesse from the per­spec­ti­ve of the bere­a­ved rela­ti­ves and the sur­vi­vors. Within the space of just a few minu­tes, the per­pe­tra­tor shot nine young peo­p­le dead becau­se he did not con­sider them to be German. What are the direct and long-term con­se­quen­ces of such an attack on peo­p­le and their city? Director Marcin Wierzchowski accom­pa­nied the prot­ago­nists for four years as they faced their grief and stri­ved to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. But the film also reve­als their strugg­le for reco­gni­ti­on and a sen­se of belon­ging in the coun­try they call home. The rela­ti­ves feel aban­do­ned by the aut­ho­ri­ties and poli­ti­ci­ans ali­ke becau­se, despi­te many words of sym­pa­thy, they them­sel­ves are left to unco­ver the cir­cum­s­tances of the crime. In the pro­cess, they encoun­ter the cold bureau­cra­cy of a sys­tem that is woeful­ly unpre­pared for such an attack – even though right-wing ter­ror is a tra­gi­cal­ly com­mon­place part of German history.

    A midd­le-class Palestinian fami­ly in Haifa sees life spi­ral out of con­trol under the oppres­si­ve rea­li­ty of con­tem­po­ra­ry Israeli society.

    The daugh­ter, Fifi, is stu­dy­ing in Jerusalem and gets into a car acci­dent; the son, Toufic, is invol­ved in secret roman­tic liai­sons and must con­t­end with an unwan­ted pregnan­cy; and the father is embroi­led in what could amount to insu­rance fraud. 

    Oscar nomi­nee Scandar Copti (Ajami, 2009) pres­ents a grip­ping fami­ly dra­ma as his second fea­ture film. Led by an ensem­ble of non-pro­fes­sio­nal actors, it inter­wea­ves the sto­ries of mul­ti­ple cha­rac­ters who­se fates are unde­ni­ably – and res­entful­ly – inter­lin­ked. The cha­rac­ters in this mas­terful­ly writ­ten screen­play, groun­ded in inti­ma­te por­tra­yals of moral rela­ti­vism, walk a fine line bet­ween con­ce­ding to and resis­ting the sta­tus quo of Israeli sta­te vio­lence. The film pre­mie­red at the Venice Film Festival in 2024 and won the Horizons Award for Best Screenplay.

    Die impul­si­ve Wanda ist nur noch genervt. Sie und ihr Freund Janek haben sich

Das Geld ist chro­nisch knapp, stän­dig gibt es Streit, der freud­lo­se Alltag ist nur noch die Wiederholung des ewig Gleichen und Janeks rou­ti­nier­ter Pragmatismus bringt sie zur Weißglut. Haben sie über­haupt noch eine gemein­sa­me Zukunft?
    Für Wanda steht fest: Sie müs­sen durch gemein­sa­me Grenzerfahrungen wie­der zuein­an­der fin­den – oder für immer aus­ein­an­der­ge­hen. Also bre­chen sie auf, mit­ten im Winter, ein­mal 400 km den pol­ni­schen Ostseestrand ent­lang von West nach Ost. Es gilt die eiser­ne Regel: Sie dür­fen den Strand nicht ver­las­sen. Wird sie gebro­chen, ist das Projekt been­det – das gilt für die Wanderung, aber auch für ihre Beziehung. Wind, Kälte und Erschöpfung set­zen ihnen eben­so zu wie die Notwendigkeit, trotz unter­schied­li­cher Charaktere immer wie­der einen kleins­ten gemein­sa­men Nenner zu fin­den.
    Maria Zbąska insze­niert in ihrem Debüt eine Reise, die kei­nen Anfang und kein Ende zu

    Arjun Talwar kam vor vie­len Jahren nach Polen. Er arbei­tet in Warschau und hat Polnisch gelernt. Die klei­ne Straße, in der er lebt, kennt er wie sei­ne Westentasche – sie ist ein Mikrokosmos, der die pol­ni­sche Gesellschaft im 21. Jahrhundert spie­gelt. Was auch bedeu­tet: Talwar ist zwar Teil die­ses Mikrokosmos, fühlt sich aber immer noch als Fremder. Freund*innen aus­län­di­scher Herkunft tei­len sei­ne Erfahrungen – sie kön­nen in der mul­ti­kul­tu­rell gewor­de­nen Touristen-Stadt Warschau zwar arbei­ten, ein­kau­fen und ihre Freizeit ver­brin­gen, wer­den aber das Gefühl nicht los, dau­er­haft im Abseits zu ste­hen.
    Talwar nimmt für sei­nen Film-Essay die Kamera in die Hand und beginnt, im raschen
    Wechsel zwi­schen Orten, Szenen und Jahreszeiten die­sen Mikrokosmos zu erfor­schen.
    Dabei ent­deckt er Menschen, Orte und Phänomene, die er bis­her über­se­hen hat­te. Er erzählt von Freunden, die an ihrer miss­glück­ten Integration geschei­tert sind, und fin­det Menschen, die sein Schicksal tei­len. Abwechselnd beob­ach­tet er sei­ne unmit­tel­ba­re Umgebung und sich selbst. Dabei stellt er im Off-Kommentar immer wie­der die Frage: Muss ich mich ändern oder muss die pol­ni­sche Gesellschaft sich ändern, damit Zugezogene selbst­ver­ständlch Teil der Gemeinschaft wer­den kön­nen?
