Cinematically vivi\u00adsec\u00adting US-insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons sin\u00adce 1967, Frederick Wiseman has been able to sus\u00adtain inte\u00adrest throug\u00adhout his docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry epi\u00adcs becau\u00adse his obser\u00adva\u00adtio\u00adnal approach insists that dra\u00adma is woven into the fabric of ever\u00ady\u00adday life. EX<\/span> LIBRIS<\/span> beg\u00adins by intro\u00addu\u00adcing the NYPL<\/span> as a public-pri\u00adva\u00adte part\u00adner\u00adship. Whether sit\u00adting in on free talks by gre\u00adat thin\u00adkers like Patti Smith, obser\u00adving a job fair in the Bronx, or pee\u00adking into a down\u00adtown recor\u00adding stu\u00addio. \u2013 Wiseman boun\u00adces bet\u00adween three dif\u00adfe\u00adrent boroughs wit\u00adhout ever losing sight of how the Library sur\u00advi\u00adves by giving peo\u00adp\u00adle the resour\u00adces they need. \u201cLibraries are not about books,\u201d someone says in the film, \u201clibra\u00adri\u00ades are about peo\u00adp\u00adle.\u201d As EX<\/span> LIBRIS<\/span> makes clear, the NYPL<\/span> is more than just a repo\u00adsi\u00adto\u00adry of dus\u00adty hard\u00adco\u00advers. It\u2019s a tree with 92 bran\u00adches, and deep roots that bind new york city tog\u00ade\u00adther. It\u2019s a living orga\u00adnism that allows peo\u00adp\u00adle to bet\u00adter dis\u00adco\u00adver and con\u00adtex\u00adtua\u00adli\u00adze their place in this world. But the main source of con\u00adten\u00adti\u00ado\u00adnof this film \u2014 is the ques\u00adti\u00adon of digi\u00adtiza\u00adti\u00adon. Wiseman is fasci\u00adna\u00adted by how an insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adon of this size and signi\u00adfi\u00adcan\u00adce tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons from a pas\u00adsi\u00adve archi\u00adve to an acti\u00adve part of the community.
