Since the late 1940s, the Brasches have been the per\u00adfect fami\u00adly of par\u00adty offi\u00adci\u00adals, living the German dream of socia\u00adlism in the Soviet zone of occu\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adon. Horst Brasch, a pas\u00adsio\u00adna\u00adte anti-fascist, is hel\u00adping to build an East German sta\u00adte which his wife, Gerda, won\u2019t con\u00adsider home. Their son Thomas is a bud\u00adding lite\u00adra\u00adry star. Like his father, he dreams of a more just world, but like youn\u00adger brot\u00adhers Peter and Klaus, he is cri\u00adti\u00adcal of the way in which socia\u00adlism has been imple\u00admen\u00adted. As they do ever\u00ady\u00adwhe\u00adre else, the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons clash in East Germany in 1968. Horst turns Thomas over to the aut\u00adho\u00adri\u00adties \u2014 trig\u00adge\u00adring the end of his own care\u00ader in the pro\u00adcess. After 1989, socia\u00adlist dreams of any kind are no lon\u00adger of value.
