Based on a novel by Guy de Maupassant and sha\u00adring the\u00admes (male tre\u00ada\u00adchery, suf\u00adfe\u00adring) as well as a title with Mikio Naruse\u2019s 1963 dra\u00adma, St\u00e9phane Briz\u00e9\u2019s gor\u00adge\u00adous peri\u00adod pie\u00adce explo\u00adres the bleak lot of an aris\u00adto\u00adcra\u00adtic hei\u00adress in 19th-cen\u00adtu\u00adry France. Shot in boxy 1.33:1 ratio, and kissed by fli\u00adcke\u00adring cand\u00adle\u00adlight, this a world so per\u00adsua\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly rea\u00adli\u00adsed that you can almost smell the damp that rises, along with the debt. We fol\u00adlow Jeanne (Judith Chemla) from the clear-eyed hop\u00adeful\u00adness of youth to late midd\u00adle age; it\u2019s a per\u00adfor\u00admance that is so com\u00adpel\u00adling that we for\u00adgi\u00adve the film its fair\u00adly dis\u00adpi\u00adri\u00adting tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adry and por\u00adtra\u00ady\u00adal of a woman who often seems litt\u00adle more than a hel\u00adp\u00adless chat\u00adtel.
