An aste\u00adro\u00adid col\u00adl\u00adi\u00addes with the pre\u00adhis\u00adto\u00adric Earth, caus\u00ading the extinc\u00adtion of the planet\u2019s dino\u00adsaurs, but spa\u00adring a tri\u00adbe of cave\u00admen living in a val\u00adley. Finding a rough\u00adly sphe\u00adri\u00adcal chunk of the aste\u00adro\u00adid that is too hot to touch, the cave\u00admen begin to kick it around and invent a sports games named football.<\/p>\n
Many years later during the Stone Age, a young cave\u00adman named Dug (Eddie Redmayne) lives in the val\u00adley with his chief Bobnar (Timothy Spall), and many other cave\u00admen such as Asbo, (Johnny Vegas), Gravelle (Gina Yashere), Treebor (Richard Ayoade), Magma (Selina Griffiths), Barry (Mark Williams), Grubup (Richard Webber), Thongo and Eemak (Simon Greenall). One day, Dug sug\u00adgests to Bobnar that they should try hun\u00adting wool\u00adly mam\u00admo\u00adths ins\u00adtead of rab\u00adbits, but he brushes him off.<\/p>\n
A Bronze Age army of War Elephants led by Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) dri\u00adves the tri\u00adbe out of the val\u00adley and into the sur\u00adroun\u00adding vol\u00adca\u00adnic bad\u00adlands, pro\u00adclai\u00adming that the Stone Age has ended. Dug tri\u00ades to attack the army, but falls into a cart and is unkno\u00adwing\u00adly taken to Nooth\u2019s city. While try\u00ading to eva\u00adde the guards and escape, he is mista\u00adken for a foot\u00adball play\u00ader and led onto the pitch befo\u00adre a full sta\u00addi\u00adum crowd. He chal\u00adlenges Nooth\u2019s eli\u00adte local team to a match with the val\u00adley at sta\u00adke and pro\u00admi\u00adses that the tri\u00adbe will work in Nooth\u2019s mines fore\u00adver if they lose. Nooth dis\u00admis\u00adses the pro\u00adpo\u00adsal at first, but chan\u00adges his mind once he rea\u00adli\u00adzes that he can pro\u00adfit off the match.<\/p>\n
Dug dis\u00adco\u00advers that alt\u00adhough his ances\u00adtors inven\u00adted foot\u00adball, the other mem\u00adbers of his tri\u00adbe are too dim to under\u00adstand it. After their only ball is des\u00adtroy\u00aded, Dug and his pet boar Hognob (Nick Park) sneak into the city to ste\u00adal more but are found by a local resi\u00addent of Bronze city named Goona (Maisie Williams). Resentful over the team\u2019s exclu\u00adsi\u00adon of women, she helps them ste\u00adal some balls and agrees to help him and the tri\u00adbe win the game.<\/p>\n
Goona points out that the play\u00aders on Nooth\u2019s team are talen\u00adted but too ego\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal to work tog\u00ade\u00adther effec\u00adtively. The cave\u00admen impro\u00adve in skill and team\u00adwork under her coa\u00adching. Nooth recei\u00adves a Message Bird (Rob Brydon) from Queen Oofeefa, war\u00adning him to not unde\u00adre\u00adsti\u00adma\u00adte Dug\u2019s team. To demo\u00adra\u00adli\u00adse Dug, Nooth has him brought to the mines and shows him cave pain\u00adtings made by his tribe\u2019s ances\u00adtors, who pro\u00adved so ine\u00adpt at foot\u00adball that they never won a match and even\u00adtual\u00adly gave up the sport.<\/p>\n
On the day of the match with Oofeefa (Miriam Margolyes) in atten\u00addance, Dug announ\u00adces his for\u00adfeit\u00adu\u00adre as part of a deal to spa\u00adre the rest of the tri\u00adbe and agrees to take their place in the mines. However, his reinvi\u00adgo\u00adra\u00adted team\u00adma\u00adtes per\u00adsua\u00adde him to break the deal and play the match. They are down 3\u20131 at half-time, but ral\u00adly in the second half to tie the score. Nooth inca\u00adpa\u00adci\u00adta\u00adtes the refe\u00adree and takes his place, making bia\u00adsed calls in favour of the local team that leads to Bobnar being kno\u00adcked out.<\/p>\n
Hognob takes his place and blocks a penal\u00adty kick, and Dug scores to win the match for the cave\u00admen, 4\u20133. The cave\u00admen win their val\u00adley back with the respect of Oofeefa, the local team, and the crowd. Nooth tri\u00ades to escape with the inten\u00adti\u00adons to ste\u00adal all their money, but Goona stops him with help from a giant duck, they arrest him for his theft and ever\u00adyo\u00adne gets their money back.<\/p>\n
Goona joins Dug\u2019s tri\u00adbe for a hunt, but they are cha\u00adsed away by a rab\u00adbit pre\u00adten\u00adding to be a wool\u00adly mammoth.<\/p>\n
