In Moscow, at the end of the school day, stu\u00addents are depar\u00adting on their way home. One twel\u00adve year old boy, Alexey, deci\u00addes to take an indi\u00adrect path home rather than using the regu\u00adlar city streets. Alexey takes a path which leads him to walk by a local river in a woo\u00added area just on the out\u00adskirts of town. He appears to be in no par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar rush to get home. His par\u00adents, Zhenya and Boris, are in the midst of obtai\u00adning a divorce, with much ani\u00admo\u00adsi\u00adty. They are por\u00adtray\u00aded as having diver\u00adgent and incom\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adble per\u00adso\u00adna\u00adli\u00adties. Both are try\u00ading to form new lives in new relationships.<\/p>\n

One day, it is dis\u00adco\u00adver\u00aded that the boy has dis\u00adap\u00adpeared from home, and his mother calls the poli\u00adce for assis\u00adtance. At first, the poli\u00adce see this as the simp\u00adle case of a runa\u00adway child and expect the boy to return home within a day or two. However, when Alexey does not return, a vol\u00adun\u00adteer group spe\u00adcia\u00adli\u00adzing in the search for miss\u00ading per\u00adsons takes over the case and prompt\u00adly initia\u00adtes a preli\u00admi\u00adna\u00adry search for the boy by sen\u00adding the par\u00adents to estran\u00adged rela\u00adti\u00adves in the hope of loca\u00adting him. They are first sent to see if Alexey is at his mother\u2019s par\u00adents. Alexey is not the\u00adre when they arri\u00adve, though their trip to visit her mother out of town is punc\u00adtua\u00adted by ten\u00adsi\u00adon bet\u00adween the estran\u00adged rela\u00adti\u00adves and Boris is ver\u00adbal\u00adly bera\u00adted and exco\u00adria\u00adted by Zhenya. On the return trip home, her ver\u00adbal abu\u00adse escala\u00adtes to the point that Boris dischar\u00adges her on the rural road\u00adway befo\u00adre they get back to town.<\/p>\n

The fail\u00adure of the poli\u00adce to find Alexey prompt\u00adly escala\u00adtes the search for him into an all out emer\u00adgen\u00adcy miss\u00ading per\u00adsons search across the town and sur\u00adroun\u00adding are\u00adas. A search of an aban\u00addo\u00adned muni\u00adci\u00adpal buil\u00adding from an old dila\u00adpi\u00adda\u00adted city deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment pro\u00adject whe\u00adre Alexey was known to have visi\u00adted turns up not\u00adhing. Finally, the par\u00adents are asked to come to the mor\u00adgue to exami\u00adne and try to iden\u00adti\u00adfy the remains of a John Doe<\/a> child of still unknown iden\u00adti\u00adty. The par\u00adents both deny that the dis\u00adfi\u00adgu\u00adred dead chil\u00add\u2019s body is their son, though the expe\u00adri\u00adence of being put through the iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon pro\u00adcess is emo\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly trau\u00adma\u00adtic to them as they break\u00addown in tears of despe\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon, with Alexey still missing.<\/p>\n

Later, Alexey\u2019s mother has sold their apart\u00adment and workers begin dis\u00admant\u00adling wall han\u00adgings and appli\u00adances left behind in the now vacant apart\u00adment. Outside on the street, miss\u00ading per\u00adson pos\u00adters of Alexey now can\u00advas lar\u00adge parts of the city try\u00ading to seek help in loca\u00adting the miss\u00ading boy. The sce\u00adne shifts to the near\u00adby river by the woo\u00added path which Alexey used to use to walk home after school and the view focu\u00adses on an exten\u00added land\u00adscape sce\u00adne loo\u00adking through naked win\u00adter bran\u00adches of the sur\u00adroun\u00adding very tall trees. The tree bran\u00adches sway slight\u00adly against the win\u00adter sky with no sight of Alexey or anyo\u00adne else among the naked win\u00adter branches.
