Stan lives with his wife and daugh\u00adter in the Watts dis\u00adtrict of Los Angeles. He is a sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adve drea\u00admer who seeks refu\u00adge from harsh rea\u00adli\u00adty in his fami\u00adly life. His tor\u00admen\u00adting job at a slaugh\u00adter\u00adhouse, whe\u00adre he dis\u00adem\u00adbo\u00adwels dead sheep, visi\u00adbly takes it toll on him, and he iso\u00adla\u00adtes hims\u00adelf from the community.<\/p>\n

Charles Burnett\u2019s the\u00adsis film at UCLA<\/span>, shot on weekends in 1977 for pocket chan\u00adge, is one of the unseen mas\u00adter\u00adworks of American film histo\u00adry. It has been com\u00adpared to Italian Neo-rea\u00adlism becau\u00adse of its rough, empa\u00adthe\u00adtic docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry qua\u00adli\u00adty; others see the influence of Cassavetes\u2019s \u201eShadows\u201d, while Burnett hims\u00adelf names Jean Renoir as his role model. In 1981 the Forum intro\u00addu\u00adced the film to an inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal audi\u00adence; in 1990 it was named one of the 50 titles in the \u201eNational Film Registry\u201d at the Library of Congress. To date, howe\u00adver, unsett\u00adled issues rela\u00adted to music rights have kept the film out of dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon. Restored in 35mm by the UCLA<\/span> Film and Television Archive, Killer of Sheep can now be seen on the screen again, three deca\u00addes after its crea\u00adti\u00adon. The film remains inspi\u00adring \u2013 every grai\u00adny black-and-white shot con\u00adta\u00adins so much affec\u00adtion, so much authen\u00adti\u00adci\u00adty, so much poet\u00adry and dedication.
