We have two WUXIA-Classics by King Hu in our Programm:<\/p>\n

DRAGON<\/span> INN<\/span><\/strong>, Tsao, the emper\u00ador\u2019s first eunuch<\/a>, has suc\u00adcessful\u00adly bested General Yu<\/a>, his poli\u00adti\u00adcal oppo\u00adnent. The gene\u00adral was behea\u00added and his remai\u00adning child\u00adren have been exi\u00adled from China. As the child\u00adren are being escor\u00adted to the wes\u00adtern bor\u00adder of the Chinese empire, Tsao plots to have the child\u00adren kil\u00adled. Tsao\u2019s secret poli\u00adce lie in ambush at the deso\u00adla\u00adte Dragon Gate Inn. Martial arts expert Hsiao shows up at the inn, wan\u00adting to meet the inn\u00adkee\u00adper. Unknown to the secret poli\u00adce is that the inn\u00adkee\u00adper, Wu Ning, was one of the gene\u00adral\u2019s lieu\u00adten\u00adants and has sum\u00admo\u00adned Hsiao to help the child\u00adren. A brot\u00adher-sis\u00adter mar\u00adti\u00adal-artist team (child\u00adren of ano\u00adther Yu lieu\u00adten\u00adant) also show up to help. These four race to find Yu\u2019s child\u00adren and lead them to safety.<\/p>\n

A TOUCH<\/span> OF<\/span> ZEN<\/span><\/strong>,<\/p>\n

The sto\u00adry is lar\u00adge\u00adly seen through the eyes of Gu, who is a well-mea\u00adning but unam\u00adbi\u00adtious scho\u00adlar and pain\u00adter, with a ten\u00adden\u00adcy towards being clum\u00adsy and inef\u00adfec\u00adtu\u00adal. A stran\u00adger arri\u00adves in town wan\u00adting his por\u00adtrait pain\u00adted by Gu, but his real objec\u00adti\u00adve is to bring a fema\u00adle fugi\u00adti\u00adve back to the city for exe\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon on behalf of the East Chamber guards. The fugi\u00adti\u00adve, Yang, is befri\u00aden\u00added by Gu and tog\u00ade\u00adther they plot against the cor\u00adrupt Eunuch Wei who wants to era\u00addi\u00adca\u00adte all trace of her fami\u00adly after her father attempts to warn the Emperor of the eunu\u00adch\u2019s cor\u00adrup\u00adti\u00adon. His daugh\u00adter fled, and Abbot Hui inter\u00adven\u00aded to pro\u00adtect them.<\/p>\n

The stran\u00adger, Yang and her fri\u00adends are all supe\u00adri\u00ador war\u00adri\u00adors. The stran\u00adger has a spe\u00adcial fle\u00adxi\u00adble sword that bends and that he can wear within his belt, making him seem unarmed.<\/p>\n

One of the uni\u00adque aspects of the film is that Gu is a non-com\u00adba\u00adtant all the way through the film and only beco\u00admes invol\u00adved when he sleeps with Yang. Upon doing so, he is no lon\u00adger the na\u00ef\u00adve bumbling inno\u00adcent, but ins\u00adtead beco\u00admes con\u00adfi\u00addent and asser\u00adti\u00adve, and when Yang\u2019s plight is reve\u00ada\u00adled, he insists on being part of it \u2013 and even comes up with a fien\u00addish \u201eGhost Trap\u201d for the East Chamber guards. This is a plan to use a sup\u00adpo\u00adsedly haun\u00adted site to play tricks on the guards to make them belie\u00adve they are prey to the undead. He first spreads rumours of ghosts, with his mother play\u00ading a part. The film then brief\u00adly uses split-screen with six sepa\u00adra\u00adte views to show the spread of the\u00adse rumours.<\/p>\n

In the after\u00admath, Gu walks through the car\u00adna\u00adge laug\u00adhing at the inge\u00adnui\u00adty of his plan until the true cost of human life dawns upon him. He sees Abbot Hui and his fol\u00adlo\u00adwers arri\u00adve to help bury the dead.<\/p>\n

After the batt\u00adle, Gu is unable to find Yang, who he is told has left him and does not want him to fol\u00adlow her. He tracks her down at the monas\u00adtery of the saint\u00adly and powerful Abbot Hui Yuan, whe\u00adre she has given birth to a child by Gu and beco\u00adme a nun. She tells Gu that their desti\u00adny tog\u00ade\u00adther has ended and gives Gu their child. Later, when Gu and the child are tra\u00adcked down by Hsu Hsien-Chen, the evil com\u00adman\u00adder of Eunuch Wei\u2019s army, Yang and Abbot Hui come to Gu\u2019s res\u00adcue. In the ensuing batt\u00adle, Hsu is kil\u00adled and Yang and Abbot Hui are bad\u00adly inju\u00adred (the lat\u00adter blee\u00adding gol\u00adden blood). The film famously ends with the inju\u00adred Yang stag\u00adge\u00adring towards a sil\u00adhou\u00adet\u00adted figu\u00adre, pre\u00adsu\u00adma\u00adb\u00adly Abbot Hui, seen medi\u00adta\u00adting with the set\u00adting sun forming a halo around his head, an image sug\u00adgest\u00ading the Buddha and enlightenment.<\/p>\n
