Mildred and Richard Loving were arres\u00adted in 1958 for the crime of get\u00adting mar\u00adried. According to the sta\u00adte of Virginia, she was \u201ecolo\u00adred,\u201d he was \u201ewhite,\u201d and their mar\u00adria\u00adge was ille\u00adgal. Both were sen\u00adten\u00adced to a year in pri\u00adson \u2014 a sen\u00adtence that was only sus\u00adpen\u00added on the con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon that they lea\u00adve Virginia. The cou\u00adple fought that judgment befo\u00adre the US<\/span> Supreme Court, which ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly ruled in their favour, brin\u00adging an end to Virginia\u2019s anti-mis\u00adce\u00adgenati\u00adon laws. This inspi\u00adring film from Jeff Nichols (Mud<\/em>, Take Shelter<\/em>) tells Mildred and Richard\u2019s sto\u00adry of romance and inju\u00ads\u00adti\u00adce with ten\u00adder\u00adness and wisdom.<\/p>\n

The Civil Rights move\u00adment is still in its infan\u00adcy when Richard (Joel Edgerton), a con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion worker, pro\u00adpo\u00adses to Mildred (Ruth Negga) on the same Virginia acreage whe\u00adre he plans to build their home. It should be the begin\u00adning of a blissful peri\u00adod, but trou\u00adble is alre\u00ada\u00addy bre\u00adwing. Someone informs the aut\u00adho\u00adri\u00adties of Richard and Mildred\u2019s uni\u00adon. It is not long befo\u00adre poli\u00adce break down the cou\u00adple\u2019s door and drag them off to the coun\u00adty jail. They face this indi\u00adgni\u00adty with stoi\u00adcism, but the worst is yet to come.<\/p>\n

Edgerton is taci\u00adturn but vul\u00adnerable, using body lan\u00adguage to trans\u00admit both fero\u00adcious love and righ\u00adteous outra\u00adge. Negga is not\u00adhing less than a reve\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon, con\u00advey\u00ading tur\u00adbu\u00adlent emo\u00adti\u00adons with a glan\u00adce. The subt\u00adle power of the\u00adse per\u00adfor\u00adman\u00adces is heigh\u00adten\u00aded by Nichols\u2018 refu\u00adsal to redu\u00adce his sto\u00adry to spee\u00adches and high dra\u00adma. In kee\u00adping with David Wingo\u2019s sombre score, Nichols does\u00adn\u2019t push sen\u00adti\u00adment. He allows his cha\u00adrac\u00adters\u2018 sto\u00adry to steep for grea\u00adter resonance.<\/p>\n

Loving<\/em> does not revi\u00adsit histo\u00adry mere\u00adly to flat\u00adter the pre\u00adsent. Rather, it reco\u00adgni\u00adzes how far we\u2019\u00adve come while impli\u00adcit\u00adly remin\u00adding us how far we still have to go.<\/p>\n
