The desert city of Agadez in Niger has been a hub of trade rou\u00adtes sin\u00adce time imme\u00admo\u00adri\u00adal. The local Tuareg popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon always ear\u00adned a good living by trans\u00adport\u00ading goods and peo\u00adp\u00adle across the Sahara. But Agadez is also a place whe\u00adre migrants pass through on their way to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Niger has been in direct talks with the European Union about this sin\u00adce 2012. The result is a law that cri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adli\u00adzes ille\u00adgal migra\u00adti\u00adon and has made Agadez a High Risk Area, with cata\u00adstro\u00adphic con\u00adse\u00adquen\u00adces for the local eco\u00adno\u00admy. The ban on trans\u00adport led to unem\u00adploy\u00adment, hig\u00adher crime and a drug epidemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In On the Border<\/em>, three resi\u00addents of Agadez talk about the decli\u00adne of their city. Salesman Ahmed Dizzi looks back with nost\u00adal\u00adgia to a time when lar\u00adge num\u00adbers of European tou\u00adrists used to visit the his\u00adto\u00adric city and spend a lot of money. Radio repor\u00adter Tilla Amadou ques\u00adti\u00adons the effec\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness of European trai\u00adning pro\u00adgrams for bor\u00adder guards. And for\u00admer mayor Rhissa Feltou argues that the new bor\u00adder con\u00adtrols are a thre\u00adat to the tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal noma\u00addic exis\u00adtence of the Tuareg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
