The pro\u00adfound cul\u00adtu\u00adral influence of the com\u00adpo\u00adser, per\u00adfor\u00admer and inter\u00addi\u00adsci\u00adpli\u00adna\u00adry artist Meredith Monk is often over\u00adloo\u00adked. As a fema\u00adle artist, she had to fight for reco\u00adgni\u00adti\u00adon and resour\u00adces in the male-domi\u00adna\u00adted art sce\u00adne of down\u00adtown New York of the 1960s and 1970s. Early reviews in \u201cThe New York Times\u201d were vicious and sexist, with Clive Barnes cal\u00adling her \u201ca dis\u00adgrace to the name of dancing\u201d and John Rockwell opi\u00adning that she was \u201cso ear\u00adnest\u00adly stran\u00adge in a talen\u00adted litt\u00adle-girl way\u201d. And yet, as her cele\u00adbra\u00adted con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry Philip Glass says: \u201cShe, among all of us, was \u2013 and still is \u2013 the uni\u00adque\u00adly gifted one.\u201d
Monk in Pieces<\/em> is a mosaic that mir\u00adrors the struc\u00adtu\u00adre of her own work and illu\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtes her wild\u00adly ori\u00adgi\u00adnal voca\u00adbu\u00adla\u00adry of sound and imagery. In the film\u2019s final chap\u00adters, Monk con\u00adfronts mor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adty. We see her wari\u00adly ent\u00adrust her mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adce \u201cAtlas\u201d to the direc\u00adtor Yuval Sharon and sin\u00adger Joanna Lynn-Jacobs for a new pro\u00adduc\u00adtion with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. For 60 years, Monk has direc\u00adted and per\u00adfor\u00admed in all her works; now she must learn to let go. What will hap\u00adpen to such sin\u00adgu\u00adlar crea\u00adti\u00adons after she is gone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
