When par\u00adents can no lon\u00adger ful\u00adfil their duty of care, the children\u2019s world often falls apart. Nothing stays as it was. Suddenly it is no lon\u00adger mum or dad who are in char\u00adge but the youth wel\u00adfa\u00adre sys\u00adtem. Daniel Abma fol\u00adlo\u00adwed a youth housing group in a rural area over seve\u00adral years, show\u00ading pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal edu\u00adca\u00adtors who want to give five boys bet\u00adween the ages of seven and four\u00adteen what they need most urgen\u00adtly, day by day: secu\u00adri\u00adty, ori\u00aden\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, a home.
The docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry focus is not on the child\u00adren but on tho\u00adse who take the par\u00adents\u2019 place. They some\u00adti\u00admes remind us of Don Quixote til\u00adting at the wind\u00admills, for the\u00adre is a dif\u00adfu\u00adsi\u00adon of respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty bet\u00adween school, youth wel\u00adfa\u00adre ser\u00advices, and absent mothers and fathers. Words fail when adults do not keep appoint\u00adments, when tho\u00adse in char\u00adge capi\u00adtu\u00adla\u00adte in the face of racist bul\u00adly\u00ading and pro\u00adpo\u00adse some \u201ctime out\u201d \u2013 for the bul\u00adlied boy \u2013 in a psych\u00adia\u00adtric faci\u00adli\u00adty. It would be easy to denoun\u00adce the\u00adse mecha\u00adnisms, but that is not the point Daniel Abma wants to make. His obser\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon, both empha\u00adtic and reser\u00adved, looks ques\u00adtio\u00adnin\u00adgly into the gaps in the sys\u00adtem \u2013 with tho\u00adse who are in dan\u00adger of fal\u00adling through and tho\u00adse who try to fill them with affec\u00adtion. He makes us suspect that the ans\u00adwer is not to clo\u00adse all the system\u2019s gaps. It is peo\u00adp\u00adle who are the\u00adre for other peo\u00adp\u00adle and take respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty. Luc-Carolin Ziemann<\/p>\n\n\n\n
