In 1980, two bio\u00adgra\u00adphies cross paths in a Paris cine\u00adma: tho\u00adse of young cine\u00adma-goer Alexander Horwath and the actor Henry Fonda. Horwath reco\u00adg\u00adnis\u00aded ear\u00adly on that the popu\u00adlar view of Fonda as a \u201ctypi\u00adcal American\u201d and the \u201ccon\u00adsci\u00adence of the USA<\/span>\u201d in his acting roles doesn\u2019t paint the full pic\u00adtu\u00adre. It is the more con\u00advo\u00adlu\u00adted paths of Fonda\u2019s bio\u00adgra\u00adphy and how he play\u00aded roles and embo\u00addi\u00aded atti\u00adtu\u00addes exten\u00adding bey\u00adond indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal cha\u00adrac\u00adters that tru\u00adly inte\u00adrest Horwath. Thrillingly edi\u00adted with Michael Palm, his essay film fol\u00adlows them across the histo\u00adry of film into an ima\u00adgi\u00adna\u00adry repu\u00adblic of places, times, cha\u00adrac\u00adters: \u201cThe United States of Fonda\u201d. Fonda beco\u00admes the link bet\u00adween an old and a new America, the thoughtful face of the alle\u00adged tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon from the law of the jungle to civi\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon as well as a cri\u00adtic of an American self-image that only ser\u00adves its\u00adelf. Paradoxically, it\u2019s the magic of cine\u00adma invo\u00adked in the film that con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtes to this (self-)disenchantment of America via its own spe\u00adci\u00adfic tech\u00adni\u00adques and the help of one of its grea\u00adtest magi\u00adci\u00adans. And in doing so crea\u00adtes a won\u00adderful\u00adly com\u00adplex cine\u00adma\u00adtic memo\u00adri\u00adal to both the USA<\/span> and sto\u00adrytel\u00adler and actor Fonda \u2013 the pre\u00adsi\u00addent that never was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
