Following in the foot\u00ads\u00adteps of the Hamburg film direc\u00adtor Hans Schomburgk who tra\u00advel\u00adled through the German colo\u00adny of Togo from Lom\u00e9 to the north with his com\u00adpa\u00adn\u00adion and actress Meg Gehrts in 1913, J\u00fcrgen Ellinghaus screens the foo\u00adta\u00adge shot then at its loca\u00adti\u00adons in modern-day Togo. Schomburgk\u2019s affir\u00adma\u00adti\u00adve images show slave labour, humi\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon and the arro\u00adgan\u00adce of the colo\u00adni\u00adal power. The mate\u00adri\u00adal is con\u00adtras\u00adted by Gehrts\u2019 roman\u00adti\u00adcis\u00ading dia\u00adry ent\u00adries and other colo\u00adni\u00adal reports which often testi\u00adfy to a hor\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading coldness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scree\u00adnings of this mate\u00adri\u00adal, which has never been shown in Togo befo\u00adre, prompt the audi\u00aden\u00adces to reflect on tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon, ste\u00adreo\u00adty\u00adpes, the \u201cwhite gaze.\u201d In the vil\u00adla\u00adges, the colo\u00adni\u00adal images con\u00adju\u00adre up memo\u00adries of han\u00added down sto\u00adries. In the metro\u00adpo\u00adlis of Lom\u00e9, young film enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts deplo\u00adre that the\u00adse images were kept from them until today and dis\u00adcuss in which con\u00adtexts they should be scree\u00adned. But \u201cTogoland Projections\u201d not only shows how much the\u00adse pain\u00adful docu\u00adments and texts are nee\u00added in con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry Togo, becau\u00adse they are part of the country\u2019s histo\u00adry. The film also demons\u00adtra\u00adtes that they are nee\u00added in Germany so we can take respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty for our sup\u00adpres\u00adsed histo\u00adry and face our own racism \u2013 past and pre\u00adsent.
