Winner of the Grand Prix at the first Tokyo International Film Festival in 1985, Typhoon Club is wide\u00adly regard\u00aded as the semi\u00adnal film of direc\u00adtor Shinji Somai\u2019s care\u00ader. A work of raw, ele\u00admen\u00adtal power, it fol\u00adlows an ensem\u00adble of juni\u00ador high stu\u00addents in a pro\u00advin\u00adcial town, beset by a summer\u2011y malai\u00adse as a typho\u00adon looms in the air. When the storm makes land\u00adfall, the teens hole up in their school unsu\u00adper\u00advi\u00adsed, while ano\u00adther class\u00adma\u00adte (Yuki Kudo) dis\u00adap\u00adpears alo\u00adne on a har\u00adro\u00adwing trek to the big city. Set adrift in a world sud\u00adden\u00adly unmoo\u00adred, the stu\u00addents let loo\u00adse their pent-up angst and bur\u00adgeo\u00adning pas\u00adsi\u00adons in a series of pro\u00adpul\u00adsi\u00adve, phan\u00adtas\u00admic scenes\u2014part apo\u00adca\u00adlyp\u00adse, part utopia\u2014as the delu\u00adge rages on into the night.
Observed in dar\u00ading long takes, direc\u00adtor Somai gives mate\u00adri\u00adal form to the stu\u00addents\u2019 tur\u00adbu\u00adlent inner lives. When day breaks and the rains let up, the youngs\u00adters open their eyes to a world in ruins\u2014or a world rene\u00adwed. The 10th best Japanese film of all time, accor\u00adding to Japan\u2019s Kinema Junpo poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
