Films about artists and the art life rare\u00adly grapp\u00adle with the ever\u00ady\u00adday busi\u00adness of what artists do \u2013 or, in their pro\u00adcras\u00adti\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon, don\u2019t do. That\u2019s why Kelly Reichardt\u2019s SHOWING<\/span> UP<\/span> is such a reve\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon \u2013 and, as a wry depar\u00adtu\u00adre in this writer-director\u2019s care\u00ader, such an out\u00adright plea\u00adsu\u00adre.
Reichardt\u2019s films have often been touch\u00aded with humour, but here she has made an out-and-out come\u00addy \u2013 alt\u00adhough cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adristi\u00adcal\u00adly, a phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphi\u00adcal, laid\u00adback, melan\u00adcho\u00adlic one. It\u2019s set in Portland, Oregon \u2013 an endu\u00adring bas\u00adti\u00adon of US<\/span> coun\u00adter\u00adcul\u00adtu\u00adre \u2013 whe\u00adre strugg\u00adling sculp\u00adtor Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is plan\u00adning her own show. Committed though she is, she is easi\u00adly dis\u00adtrac\u00adted by life\u2019s incon\u00adve\u00adni\u00aden\u00adces: her trou\u00adbled brot\u00adher (John Magaro); her cran\u00adky father (Judd Hirsch) and his freel\u00adoa\u00adding house guests (a deli\u00adcious comic turn by Amanda Plummer and Matt Malloy); an ego\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal, negli\u00adgent land\u00adla\u00addy and fel\u00adlow artist (Hong Chau); and a pige\u00adon which enters Lizzy\u2019s life at the worst pos\u00adsi\u00adble moment. As taci\u00adturn, tight-wound Lizzy, Reichardt regu\u00adlar Williams shows a who\u00adle new dead\u00adpan comic side to her talent, as the director\u2019s focus on the ordi\u00adna\u00adry and the uneventful opens up a rich vein of comic nuan\u00adce and even, at times, joy\u00adous far\u00adce.
