Seven-year-old Joey lives in Brooklyn. When his mother goes to visit his sick grand\u00admo\u00adther, older brot\u00adher Lennie is left to watch Joey. Babysitting ruins the 12-year-old\u2019s plans for the day, so he enlists his fri\u00adends to play a prank on Joey. They give him a (toy) gun to play with and when it goes off, Lennie plays dead. Thinking he\u2019ll be arres\u00adted as a mur\u00adde\u00adrer, Joey takes off. With six dol\u00adlars in his pocket, he heads for Coney Island, whe\u00adre he wan\u00adders the beach and goes on the rides \u2026 Using a 35mm came\u00adra strap\u00adped to his body, pho\u00adto\u00adgrapher Morris Engel docu\u00adments the amu\u00adse\u00adment park from the per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve of his young hero. As Joey rides the carou\u00adsel, throws a base\u00adball, eats cot\u00adton can\u00addy, and coll\u00adects depo\u00adsit bot\u00adt\u00adles, the film\u00adma\u00adkers use the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to prof\u00adfer up cine\u00adma\u00adtic sket\u00adches of Americans at lei\u00adsu\u00adre \u2013 strol\u00adling, flir\u00adting, swim\u00adming, and sun\u00adbathing. As if cap\u00adtu\u00adred with the won\u00adde\u00adring eyes of a seven-year-old, Little Fugitive<\/em> casts an amu\u00adsed and anthro\u00adpo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal eye over the peo\u00adp\u00adle in the crowd in a mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adce of black-and-white cinematography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 2023 Retrospective<\/em>, inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly renow\u00adned direc\u00adtors, actors, and screen\u00adwri\u00adters were asked to sel\u00adect their per\u00adso\u00adnal coming-of-age favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when they sit in the director\u2019s chair for the first time they have a who\u00adle expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced crew to back them up.
