Without the title, it would be hard to place the first shots, asi\u00adde from their posi\u00adti\u00adon in the year. We start in January and end in December, with around five minu\u00adtes dedi\u00adca\u00adted to each month. A lonely tree befo\u00adre a win\u00adter sky, modern woo\u00adden hou\u00adses and a plain brick hotel from the ear\u00adly 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, pas\u00adsing trains heard befo\u00adre seen: this could be any small American town, which it is and it isn\u2019t; there\u2019s enough time and space for con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adti\u00adon of both. Founded in 1908, Allensworth was the first muni\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adli\u00adty in California to be gover\u00adned by African-Americans. As we pass through the year and around the sett\u00adle\u00adment, ele\u00adments of this spe\u00adci\u00adfic heri\u00adta\u00adge also begin to accu\u00admu\u00adla\u00adte: \u201cBlackbird\u201d by Nina Simone, \u201cIn the Pines\u201d sung by Huddie Ledbetter, Lucille Clifton poems read out by a litt\u00adle girl direct to came\u00adra. But the\u00adse are just echo\u00ades in a place that is now a muse\u00adum, a space for reflec\u00adtion that the film maps out, frag\u00adments and ampli\u00adfies as only cine\u00adma can, a place to think about what was, like the gra\u00advey\u00adard shown in the final shot. But remem\u00adbe\u00adring the past is also remem\u00adbe\u00adring that not all pas\u00adts are equal, and that\u2019s whe\u00adre dura\u00adti\u00adon comes into play. Time still needs to be taken.
