In a nor\u00adt\u00adhern German attic: boxes of pin\u00adned but\u00adter\u00adflies, careful\u00adly hand-colou\u00adred pho\u00adto\u00adgraphs of the local flo\u00adra and fau\u00adna, hundreds of stuf\u00adfed and dus\u00adty birds \u2013 J\u00fcrgen Friedrich Mahrt (1882\u20131940) did a gre\u00adat job. His coll\u00adec\u00adtions echo a pre\u00adsent that doesn\u2019t exist any\u00admo\u00adre. And yet all signs of an eco\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal cri\u00adsis can be found buried in them.
Dead or ali\u00adve? There is an uncan\u00adny ele\u00adment in J\u00fcrgen Friedrich Mahrt\u2019s pho\u00adtos: One can\u2019t always be sure whe\u00adther the ani\u00admal cap\u00adtu\u00adred in the frame is the result of hours of wai\u00adting or just a spe\u00adci\u00admen staged to look life\u00adli\u00adke. The ripp\u00adles around the duck on the pond are miss\u00ading, the bird of prey looks sus\u00adpi\u00adcious\u00adly calm direct\u00adly into the lens. Mahrt crossed bor\u00adders. He sacri\u00adfi\u00adced his duties as a far\u00admer to the urge to docu\u00adment natu\u00adral envi\u00adron\u00adments we hard\u00adly find in natu\u00adre today. Ancient forests, enchan\u00adted moors, macro views of fat, colourful cater\u00adpil\u00adlars \u2013 almost magi\u00adcal images that make one sad in view of a varie\u00adty irre\u00adtrie\u00adv\u00ada\u00adb\u00adly lost. His gre\u00adat-grand\u00add\u00adaugh\u00adter S\u00f6nje Storm has the quiet eccentric\u2019s estate ana\u00adly\u00adsed by experts, shows peat cut\u00adters, extinct spe\u00adci\u00ades and a chan\u00adging coun\u00adtry\u00adsi\u00adde. An excee\u00addin\u00adgly sti\u00admu\u00adla\u00adting excur\u00adsi\u00adon, con\u00adge\u00adni\u00adal\u00adly accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by the scur\u00adri\u00adlous elec\u00adtro\u00adni\u00adca sounds of Dominik Eulberg and Bertram Denzel.
