Like Richard Linklater in APOLLO<\/span> 10 \u00bd Wes Andersons ASTEROID<\/span> CITY<\/span> explo\u00adres a mythi\u00adcal Space Age that dreamt of a bright future very dif\u00adfe\u00adrent from the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wes Anderson, in the vein simi\u00adlar to David Lynch, makes films for hims\u00adelf and an audi\u00adence that has alre\u00ada\u00addy fal\u00adlen for his aes\u00adthe\u00adtic and his quir\u00adky sto\u00adries and cha\u00adrac\u00adters.

Just like in his past films, the plot is a Russian nes\u00adt\u00ading doll of inter\u00adla\u00adcing lay\u00aders: the came\u00adra films a recor\u00adding of a TV<\/span> pro\u00adgram about the gene\u00adsis of a play and the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties and obs\u00adta\u00adcles that need to be over\u00adco\u00adme by the pre\u00admie\u00adre, but the core of the film is the plot of the play its\u00adelf. The props are deli\u00adver\u00aded by a freight train during the ope\u00adning cre\u00addits, and the came\u00adra avo\u00adids any late\u00adral move\u00adments which could reve\u00adal that the enti\u00adre world is actual\u00adly just a paper mache faca\u00adde.

At its core, the film is about a gathe\u00adring of dif\u00adfe\u00adrent peo\u00adp\u00adle in the year 1955 in a small desert town to com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adte the anni\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adry of the aste\u00adro\u00adid impact that gave the city its name. The high\u00adlight is a rare astral event and in addi\u00adti\u00adon to this, the best of a small group of juni\u00ador sci\u00aden\u00adtists will be sel\u00adec\u00adted. For them it\u2018s an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to be around simi\u00adlar\u00adly ner\u00addy peers while their par\u00adents can talk to each other about what it\u2018s like having child\u00adren that are some\u00adwhat stran\u00adge. All the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons feel lost and ali\u00aden\u00adated from their earth\u00adly lives and despera\u00adte\u00adly want the\u00adre to be some\u00adthing in the stars that will give them mea\u00adning. Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzmann), for exam\u00adp\u00adle, is devas\u00adta\u00adted by the death of his wife and hasn\u2018t been able to tell his child\u00adren about it, to the disp\u00adlea\u00adsu\u00adre of his father-in-law Stanley (Tom Hanks). Augie can only open up to his pavi\u00adli\u00adon neigh\u00adbor, film star Midge Campbel (Scarlett Johansson), who has also lost her ori\u00aden\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon due to a pain\u00adful loss. When an ali\u00aden (Jeff Goldblum) unex\u00adpec\u00adted\u00adly lands during the cerem\u00ado\u00adny, it leads to a lock\u00addown as ins\u00adtruc\u00adted by the pre\u00adsi\u00addent as oppo\u00adsed to a meaningful impe\u00adtus. But lucki\u00adly, they can turn to the wri\u00adter or direc\u00adtor of this play at that point, and if the crea\u00adtors can\u2018t help eit\u00adher, they go one step fur\u00adther, to the front of the thea\u00adter, may\u00adbe the\u00adre will be some\u00adbo\u00addy who can say some\u00adthing hel\u00adpful the\u00adre. Or they can just not worry and see what hap\u00adpens next. Sooner or later, the pro\u00adblem will sol\u00adve its\u00adelf.

With all of its exis\u00adten\u00adtia\u00adlist con\u00adside\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons, ASTEROID<\/span> CITY<\/span> is actual\u00adly a sweet and tho\u00adrough\u00adly opti\u00admi\u00adstic decla\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of love to the ver\u00adsi\u00adon of the 1950s whe\u00adre the\u00adre was still hope for a bet\u00adter future in space and nuclear power and ever\u00ady\u00adthing, yes ever\u00ady\u00adthing, could be bought from a ven\u00adding machi\u00adne. The film is car\u00adri\u00aded by a spec\u00adta\u00adcu\u00adlar cast that have eit\u00adher alre\u00ada\u00addy been in other Anderson films (Tilda Swinton as a con\u00adfu\u00adsed astro\u00adno\u00admer) or will hop\u00adeful\u00adly pop up again (Steve Carell as the unshakeable hotel mana\u00adger). Since there\u2018s not\u00adhing to \u2018com\u00adpre\u00adhend\u2018 bes\u00adi\u00addes its per\u00adso\u00adnal emo\u00adtio\u00adnal reso\u00adnan\u00adce, which Wes Anderson films often evo\u00adke, ASTEROID<\/span> CITY<\/span> is a cine\u00ada\u00adstic gift that gives a cozy fee\u00adling of hap\u00adpi\u00adness in many shades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
