Actor Nina tra\u00advels to her home town in Germany\u2019s Ruhr regi\u00adon for her grandmother\u2019s fun\u00ade\u00adral and dis\u00adco\u00advers that her child\u00adhood home has remain\u00aded vir\u00adtual\u00adly unch\u00adan\u00adged. The cana\u00adry still chirps in the living room, her mother still sits in the kit\u00adchen pit\u00adting kilos of plums from the gar\u00adden, and her father still occa\u00adsio\u00adnal\u00adly indul\u00adges in a whis\u00adky from the \u201cbot\u00adtom shelf next to the diges\u00adtif glas\u00adses\u201d. But when the date for the fun\u00ade\u00adral is post\u00adpo\u00adned, ten\u00adsi\u00adons fla\u00adre up again bet\u00adween the prag\u00adma\u00adtic mother and her cos\u00admo\u00adpo\u00adli\u00adtan daugh\u00adter who now lives in a lar\u00adge European city and con\u00adsiders the offer of a role in German TV<\/span> soap Traumschiff<\/em> (Dreamboat) to be beneath her. And kind\u00adly old grand\u00adma is no lon\u00adger the\u00adre to cushion such con\u00adflicts.
Directed with gent\u00adle humour, DFFB<\/span> gra\u00addua\u00adte Tanja Egen\u2019s per\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adve fea\u00adture debut is much more than just a tale of such clas\u00adsic fami\u00adly pro\u00adblems as repres\u00adsed emo\u00adti\u00adons, things that remain uns\u00adpo\u00adken and a gro\u00adwing sen\u00adse of distance. Rich in detail, Geranien<\/em> is an affec\u00adtion\u00ada\u00adte obser\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon of the com\u00adplex rela\u00adti\u00adonships that exist bet\u00adween daugh\u00adters and mothers \u2013 no mat\u00adter how old a daugh\u00adter and a mother may be. Loss, it seems, is a uni\u00adver\u00adsal feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
