Ma and Guiying lead lives that are simi\u00adlar\u00adly shel\u00adte\u00adred and dif\u00adfi\u00adcult. He is a reti\u00adcent far\u00admer, the last of his fami\u00adly to remain unmar\u00adried; she is dis\u00adab\u00adled and infer\u00adti\u00adle, and long past what is con\u00adside\u00adred to be mar\u00adry\u00ading age in rural China. Their arran\u00adged mar\u00adria\u00adge, uniting two peo\u00adp\u00adle who are accus\u00adto\u00admed to iso\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon and humi\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon, would appear to force them into a rela\u00adti\u00adonship that will make life worse for both of them. But ins\u00adtead, they sei\u00adze the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to rise abo\u00adve them\u00adsel\u00adves and dis\u00adco\u00adver their shared desti\u00adny. They learn how to beco\u00adme clo\u00adse com\u00adpa\u00adn\u00adions, how to speak up, how to care for each other and even how to smi\u00adle.
