When Leonard Cohen retur\u00adned after a five-year hia\u00adtus with the 1984 album \u201cVarious Positions\u201d, Columbia Records boss Walter Yetnikoff did not even want to release it. A foo\u00adlish mis\u00adjudgment when you con\u00adsider that it con\u00adtai\u00adned one of Cohen\u2019s most per\u00adso\u00adnal and influ\u00aden\u00adti\u00adal songs in the form of \u201cHallelujah\u201d. The LP<\/span>\u2019s small initi\u00adal run was one of the reasons why the song is not always attri\u00adbu\u00adted to Cohen, but rather to Jeff Buckley, based on his sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adve cover.
The docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry beg\u00adins as a bio\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcal search for clues that uses a sin\u00adgle song to out\u00adline the Canadian poet and singer\u2019s lifel\u00adong search for tran\u00ads\u00adcen\u00addence. \u201cHallelujah\u201d is the right choice for this, becau\u00adse Cohen used the song not only to explo\u00adre his rela\u00adti\u00adonship to his Jewish roots, but also to allude to eph\u00ademeral lon\u00adgings. He also rew\u00adro\u00adte it seve\u00adral times, adding ver\u00adses about past love affairs and sexu\u00adal reve\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons. However, no song and no cul\u00adtu\u00adral expres\u00adsi\u00adon can escape inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon.
In the second part of the film, Geller and Goldfine explain how the song chan\u00adged in stran\u00adge ways as more and more per\u00adfor\u00admers cover\u00aded it \u2013 John Cale and Rufus Wainwright (for SHREK<\/span>) are just two of them. Once a hymn to the incom\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of search and ful\u00adfill\u00adment, the song was reli\u00adgious\u00adly sim\u00adpli\u00adfied, flat\u00adten\u00aded, and beca\u00adme a wed\u00adding hit.
