The title refers to the epony\u00admous 1937 poem by Else Lasker-Sch\u00fcler, in which the poet wri\u00adtes that \u201cwhat once was: love\u201d can be found at the cine\u00adma. Two deca\u00addes on from this, it was a love of cine\u00adma that brought tog\u00ade\u00adther two peo\u00adp\u00adle who signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly expan\u00added \u2013 today one might say, diver\u00adsi\u00adfied \u2013 the film histo\u00adry of post-war Germany, encom\u00adpas\u00adsing both the way films are view\u00aded as well as the dis\u00adcour\u00adse sur\u00adroun\u00adding the medi\u00adum: Erika and Ulrich Gregor.
Alice Agneskirchner\u2019s docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry fol\u00adlows various paths to get right up clo\u00adse to the foun\u00adders of Arsenal and the International Forum of New Cinema: on the one hand via the eventful life of the cou\u00adple, who have been mar\u00adried for over 60 years; on the other via tho\u00adse who have accom\u00adpa\u00adnied them along the way, inclu\u00adding such pro\u00admi\u00adnent figu\u00adres as Jutta Br\u00fcckner, Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch. The films of which the Gregors are par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly fond and to which they gave their full back\u00ading are also cen\u00adtral, as the duo beco\u00admes reac\u00adquain\u00adted with Claude Lanzmann\u2019s Shoah<\/em>, Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3\u2019s Apa<\/em> and Helke Sander\u2019s Die all\u00adsei\u00adtig redu\u00adzier\u00adte Pers\u00f6nlichkeit \u2013 Redupers<\/em>. This is not only a film about love and cine\u00adma but also a pie\u00adce of West German history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
