As with the rest of his oeu\u00advre, dupli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon and mir\u00adro\u00adring of fema\u00adle cha\u00adrac\u00adters once again informs Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s latest work, Guzen to sozo<\/em>. It would not be out of place to make a lite\u00adra\u00adry ana\u00adlo\u00adgy and, if one were to regard his two pre\u00advious films (Happy Hour <\/em>and Asako I &<\/span> II<\/span><\/em>) as novels, this new work could be descri\u00adbed as a coll\u00adec\u00adtion of short sto\u00adries. The film\u2019s recur\u00adring rhythm ampli\u00adfies this effect. The three epi\u00adso\u00addes, which each revol\u00adve around a woman, are in turn divi\u00added into three move\u00adments, like a pie\u00adce of music. They tell sto\u00adries of an unex\u00adpec\u00adted love tri\u00adang\u00adle, a fai\u00adled seduc\u00adtion trap, and an encoun\u00adter that results from a misun\u00adderstan\u00adding. The frag\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon ser\u00adves to empha\u00adsise rather than under\u00admi\u00adne the exqui\u00adsi\u00adte\u00adly orga\u00adnic sto\u00adrytel\u00adling and mise en sc\u00e8\u00adne. Although most of the action takes place in a sin\u00adgle space and invol\u00adves just two actors, not once does it feel like film\u00aded theat\u00adre. The secret lies not only in the wri\u00adting, but also in the noti\u00adon of a more com\u00adplex tem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adli\u00adty in each epi\u00adso\u00adde that flirts with sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion in the final inst\u00adal\u00adment. The moments we wit\u00adness are crystal\u00adli\u00adsed into tou\u00adch\u00ading uni\u00adver\u00adsal desti\u00adnies mark\u00aded by choices, reg\u00adrets, decep\u00adti\u00adon and coin\u00adci\u00adden\u00adces. They are the film\u2019s true protagonists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
