Yoko (play\u00aded by the for\u00admer lea\u00adding mem\u00adber of the idol<\/a> girl group<\/a> AKB48<\/span><\/a>, Atsuko Maeda<\/a>) is the repor\u00adter for a tele\u00advi\u00adsi\u00adon tra\u00advel pro\u00adgram who visits Uzbekistan<\/a> with her tele\u00advi\u00adsi\u00adon crew to make an epi\u00adso\u00adde for the pro\u00adgram. She dreams of beco\u00adming a sin\u00adger. The film con\u00adtrasts Yoko\u2019s upbeat on-came\u00adra per\u00adso\u00adna with her inter\u00adnal con\u00adflicts when she is on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film con\u00adsists of a series of epi\u00adso\u00addes in which Yoko wades into a lake to descri\u00adbe loo\u00adking for a pos\u00adsi\u00adbly mythi\u00adcal Uzbeki fish; pro\u00adclaims the deli\u00adcious crun\u00adchi\u00adness of under-coo\u00adked rice in a bowl of plov<\/em><\/a>, a local dish; repea\u00adted\u00adly takes nau\u00adsea-indu\u00adcing turns on a fun-park pen\u00addulum ride until her came\u00adra crew can get enough B\u2011camera foo\u00adta\u00adge of her face; and tri\u00ades to libe\u00adra\u00adte a goat in cap\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty named Okoo only to learn that if she does, it will be eaten by wild dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She and the crew visit Samarkand<\/a> and Tashkent<\/a>; in the lat\u00adter, she sings the clas\u00adsic \u00c9dith Piaf<\/a> anthem, Hymne \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00admour<\/a> (with Japanese lyrics], in a fan\u00adta\u00adsy sequence set at the Navoi Theatre which (as noted below) had been built after the war by Japanese POWs. During a visit to the bazaar, she wan\u00adders off with a hand-held came\u00adra and starts video\u00adta\u00adping in a rest\u00adric\u00adted area. She runs away from the poli\u00adce, who even\u00adtual\u00adly appre\u00adhend her but tre\u00adat her kind\u00adly, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly when she lear\u00adns that her fire\u00adfigh\u00adter boy\u00adfri\u00adend may have been invol\u00adved in a mas\u00adsi\u00adve oil refi\u00adnery fire in Tokyo Bay, whe\u00adre he was sta\u00adtio\u00adned. (The boy\u00adfri\u00adend is never actual\u00adly seen or heard; all the audi\u00adence lear\u00adns about him comes from texts he exch\u00adan\u00adges with Yoko.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a fina\u00adle set in the moun\u00adta\u00adins, her crew once again in pur\u00adsu\u00adit of a likely mythi\u00adcal beast, she again sings Hymne \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00admour as she ima\u00adgi\u00adnes that she has caught sight of Okoo run\u00adning free in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
