In the second part of her self-explo\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry diptych, Joanna Hogg ful\u00adly rea\u00adli\u00adzes the Proustian impli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons of film\u00ading her memo\u00adries. In the begin\u00adning, it seems as if the film just took off whe\u00adre the first one stop\u00adped, but ins\u00adtead of moving on with the emo\u00adtio\u00adnal rol\u00adler\u00adco\u00adas\u00adter ride, the mour\u00adning echo of Anthony\u2019s absence now takes over and rela\u00adtes all actions to the ques\u00adti\u00adon asked at the very begin\u00adning of the first film: how to film life? How to film what real\u00adly hap\u00adpen\u00aded?
As Julia tri\u00ades to cope with her life and make her gra\u00addua\u00adti\u00adon film about her rela\u00adti\u00adonship with Anthony, we redis\u00adco\u00adver cine\u00adma as a means to heal our wounds, not neces\u00ads\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly becau\u00adse ever\u00ady\u00adthing works out, but becau\u00adse films and the exhaus\u00adting ways of making them enable us to find new per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adves on exis\u00adtence. Rarely have the doubts of gro\u00adwing up mer\u00adged so beau\u00adtiful\u00adly with fin\u00adding one\u2019s voice as an artist, such as in the sequen\u00adces remi\u00adnis\u00adcent of Hogg\u2019s own first shorts when Julia gets lost in a Cocteau laby\u00adrinth of sur\u00adre\u00adal memo\u00adries and phan\u00adta\u00adsies.
This expres\u00adsio\u00adnist out\u00adburst stands in stark con\u00adtrast to the casu\u00adal and ten\u00adder obser\u00adva\u00adtions across the rest of the film, but also pres\u00adents us with the dis\u00adco\u00advery of a lan\u00adguage that cros\u00adses the bridge bet\u00adween expe\u00adri\u00adence and film.
