Mort Rifkin, a snob\u00adby elder\u00adly film cri\u00adtic from New York<\/a>[dis\u00adam\u00adbi\u00adgua\u00adti\u00adon nee\u00added<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>, is tel\u00adling his the\u00adra\u00adpist about the recent deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adments in his life. In the recount, he\u2019s accom\u00adpany\u00ading his much youn\u00adger wife Sue to a film fes\u00adti\u00adval in San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/a>. She works as a press agent for Philippe, a French direc\u00adtor who\u00adse banal and deri\u00adva\u00adti\u00adve anti-war film is being uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00adly cele\u00adbra\u00adted as a mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adce, to Mort\u2019s chag\u00adrin. Mort quick\u00adly beco\u00admes jea\u00adlous of Sue and Philippe\u2019s rela\u00adti\u00adonship, which incre\u00adasing\u00adly moves into open flir\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon. Mort\u2019s inner thoughts and fears cau\u00adses him to have night\u00adma\u00adres inspi\u00adred by well-known black and white<\/a> cine\u00adma\u00adtic clas\u00adsics like Citizen Kane<\/a><\/em>, Breathless<\/a><\/em>, Jules and Jim<\/a><\/em>, Persona<\/a><\/em>, The Exterminating Angel<\/a><\/em>, and 8\u00bd<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at the fes\u00adti\u00adval, Mort remi\u00adnis\u00adces about his life and the pre\u00adten\u00adtious novel that he\u2019s been wri\u00adting for deca\u00addes, try\u00ading to achie\u00adve a lite\u00adra\u00adry rele\u00advan\u00adce that elu\u00addes him. He reflects upon his youn\u00adger years when he used to teach cine\u00adma at the uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and felt hap\u00adpy and sti\u00admu\u00adla\u00adted. Meanwhile, he\u2019s hel\u00adp\u00adless to keep Sue and Philippe from spen\u00adding time with each other. Eventually, he seeks medi\u00adcal advice about some chest pains and meets Joanna \u201eJo\u201d Rojas, a Spanish doc\u00adtor who spent some time in New York and is now unhap\u00adpi\u00adly mar\u00adried with an unfaithful, tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00admen\u00adtal artist. Joanna lea\u00adves a las\u00adting impres\u00adsi\u00adon on Mort and he repea\u00adted\u00adly tri\u00ades to enga\u00adge her atten\u00adti\u00adon by faking health issues. Eventually, the two go on a sight-see\u00ading dri\u00adve through the sur\u00adroun\u00adding coun\u00adtry, both having a good time in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On their way back to town, a flat tire forces Joanna and Mort to hitch\u00adhi\u00adke back to Joanna\u2019s home, whe\u00adre she dis\u00adco\u00advers her hus\u00adband chea\u00adting on her with one of his models. The two have a bit\u00adter fight, then Joanna takes Mort back to his hotel. Here, Sue con\u00adfronts Mort about their dete\u00adrio\u00adra\u00adting rela\u00adti\u00adonship, even\u00adtual\u00adly announ\u00adcing she\u2019s lea\u00adving him to start a new life with Philippe. The next mor\u00adning, Mort calls Joanna, hoping to see her again befo\u00adre he has to return to New York, but she poli\u00adte\u00adly decli\u00adnes, despi\u00adte har\u00adbor\u00ading some affec\u00adtion for Mort and doubts about her own mar\u00adria\u00adge\u2019s toxicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Mort ima\u00adgi\u00adnes hims\u00adelf play\u00ading chess with Death in a paro\u00addy of Ingmar Bergman<\/a>\u2019s 1957 film The Seventh Seal<\/a><\/em>. Death tells him that human life is ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly meanin\u00adg\u00adless, but does\u00adn\u2019t need to be emp\u00adty. In a par\u00adting word of advice, Death tells Mort that he will see him again in the future, but Mort might win some extra time by making sure to exer\u00adcise and to avo\u00adid pro\u00adces\u00adsed foods. As the fes\u00adti\u00adval rea\u00adches its clo\u00adsing day, Mort reflects upon his chan\u00adged cir\u00adcum\u00ads\u00adtances, pon\u00adde\u00adring to go back to be a tea\u00adcher, this time with a less rigid atti\u00adtu\u00adde towards art. Back in New York, he asks his the\u00adra\u00adpist what he should do now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
