Previously acclai\u00admed for his essay\u00adi\u00adstic docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adries, Philip Scheffner has now ven\u00adtu\u00adred into fic\u00adtion. Zohra, play\u00aded by Rhim Ibrir, alre\u00ada\u00addy fea\u00adtured in Scheffner\u2019s HAVARIE<\/span><\/a> (Berlinale Forum 2016), is living in a town in sou\u00adthwes\u00adtern France. She has a seve\u00adre case of sco\u00adlio\u00adsis. Volker Sattel\u2019s came\u00adra\u00adwork exami\u00adnes X\u2011rays, fol\u00adlows Zohra to the hos\u00adpi\u00adtal and to an indoor swim\u00adming pool for rehab and sits right next to her or behind her on the bus. The images are crisp and floo\u00added with sum\u00admer light, the sen\u00adse of place and space is so pre\u00adcise that we know each of the bus stops along her way: first Poste, then Piscine, then Europe.
When Zohra\u2019s con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon impro\u00adves, her resi\u00addence per\u00admit is not rene\u00adwed, so she has to go back to Algeria. Her case worker shrugs his should\u00aders: it\u2019s out of his hands, he says, not\u00adhing he can do about it. A fade to black marks a tur\u00adning point in the sto\u00adry, after which the heroi\u00adne dis\u00adap\u00adpears from view. Scheffner con\u00adti\u00adnues to vary this game of the visi\u00adble and the invi\u00adsi\u00adble for a while until dream and ever\u00ady\u00adday rea\u00adli\u00adty fuse in the sum\u00admer heat and gla\u00adring sun\u00adlight to crea\u00adte a shim\u00adme\u00adring nar\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve in the sub\u00adjunc\u00adti\u00adve.
