In pre\u00advious films, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao alre\u00ada\u00addy revi\u00adsi\u00adted the myths of the American West with a sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adve rea\u00adlism that was groun\u00added in working with peo\u00adp\u00adle from real life. With NOMADLAND<\/span>, a recent win\u00adner of the Golden Lion in Venice, she achie\u00adves an even grea\u00adter level of reso\u00adnan\u00adce, com\u00adbi\u00adning indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal grief and the need for social rou\u00adti\u00adnes with the idea of an ever-chan\u00adging fron\u00adtier: this time it\u2019s peo\u00adp\u00adle moving away from sett\u00adle\u00adments, away from a cul\u00adtu\u00adre in decli\u00adne. We fol\u00adlow Frances McDormand in a sur\u00adpri\u00adsin\u00adgly res\u00adtrai\u00adned lead per\u00adfor\u00admance that is all the more enthr\u00adal\u00adling as a result: Fern, a woman of around 60 who has deci\u00added to live in a RV<\/span> fol\u00adlo\u00adwing the death of her hus\u00adband. She\u2019s not home\u00adl\u00adess, she says, but house\u00adl\u00adess, refu\u00adsing a cer\u00adtain kind of sym\u00adpa\u00adthy. Most of the other cha\u00adrac\u00adters, inclu\u00adding part-time workers and peo\u00adp\u00adle found unwor\u00adt\u00adhy by the sys\u00adtem, are real. NOMADLAND<\/span> shows a side of America rare\u00adly seen in cine\u00adma. We accom\u00adpa\u00adny desti\u00adtu\u00adte peo\u00adp\u00adle working in are\u00adas such as an Amazon pack\u00ading sta\u00adti\u00adon or in trai\u00adler parks in which the dro\u00adpouts form sub\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adte com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties. Despite its sharp obser\u00adva\u00adto\u00adry eye, the film is not see\u00adking to make accu\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adons about the exces\u00adses of an ailing sys\u00adtem.
