It\u2019s the start of the 1960s in the GDR<\/span>: Sigrid, from Leipzig, falls in love with Lucien, a stu\u00addent from Togo, and gets pregnant. But she\u2019s mar\u00adried to Armin, and they alre\u00ada\u00addy have a son tog\u00ade\u00adther. The cou\u00adple let their dark-skin\u00adned daugh\u00adter belie\u00adve that her skin colour is a coin\u00adci\u00addence and not signi\u00adfi\u00adcant, until she dis\u00adco\u00advers the truth by chan\u00adce as a teen\u00adager. Decades later, long after she has met her bio\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal father\u2019s fami\u00adly in Togo, she recon\u00ads\u00adtructs her fami\u00adly histo\u00adry in a film as both prot\u00adago\u00adnist and aut\u00adhor. In emo\u00adtio\u00adnal and open con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adons with her ste\u00adpf\u00ada\u00adther Armin, the atmo\u00adsphe\u00adre of silence and sup\u00adpres\u00adsi\u00adon is very much in evi\u00addence. It slow\u00adly beco\u00admes clear how the social milieu has to be struc\u00adtu\u00adred in order to make such a major deni\u00adal of facts possible.Here too, pri\u00adva\u00adte mat\u00adters are poli\u00adti\u00adcal. In an inti\u00adma\u00adte explo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of her own iden\u00adti\u00adty, Ines Johnson-Spain traces the taboo topic overs\u00adha\u00addowing her child\u00adhood and in doing so also expo\u00adses an under\u00adly\u00ading racism resi\u00adding in the GDR<\/span>. In the con\u00adtext of the tou\u00adch\u00ading encoun\u00adter with her Togolese fami\u00adly whom she dis\u00adco\u00adver\u00aded so late in her life, the film beco\u00admes a reflec\u00adtion on iden\u00adti\u00adty, fami\u00adly con\u00adcepts and social norms. From the 1960s in East Berlin to the pre\u00adsent day, this inti\u00adma\u00adte, moving self-por\u00adtrait reve\u00adals a wise and hither\u00adto unwrit\u00adten German story.<\/p>\n
