England; the ear\u00adly 1980s. Young film stu\u00addent Julie wants to use her came\u00adra to bet\u00adter under\u00adstand the world. This shy woman is well awa\u00adre of her pri\u00advi\u00adle\u00adged social posi\u00adti\u00adon and, as she explains, sees her Super 8 came\u00adra as a way to break out of her own litt\u00adle bubble. She thinks she is medio\u00adcre, but the pho\u00adtos and moving images that flow into the film bear wit\u00adness to her spe\u00adcial gaze. In an unas\u00adsum\u00ading, almost docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry approach, we are intro\u00addu\u00adced to Julie\u2019s stu\u00addent milieu, into which Anthony unex\u00adpec\u00adted\u00adly enters. He is older and more distin\u00adgu\u00adis\u00adhed. He har\u00adbours a secret that Julie only unco\u00advers later, but that then dra\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly chan\u00adges everything.
\nJoanna Hogg\u2019s semi-auto\u00adbio\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcal film is both a per\u00adso\u00adnal take on the crea\u00adti\u00adve out\u00adput of upper-midd\u00adle-class Britain and an incisi\u00adve explo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of spaces, land\u00adscapes, depen\u00addent rela\u00adti\u00adonships and, not least, the medi\u00adum of film. Hogg\u2019s con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry, Tilda Swinton, plays Julie\u2019s gene\u00adrous mother; her daugh\u00adter, Honor Swinton Byrne, embo\u00addies the role of the prot\u00adago\u00adnist, who seems to be losing her grip on life. Until, that is, film comes to the res\u00adcue, as a means of expres\u00adsi\u00adon, rea\u00adli\u00adty, the\u00adra\u00adpy and a record of the times.<\/p>\n
