In a rich tor\u00adrent of archi\u00adval audio and visu\u00adals, pai\u00adred with extra\u00adcts from her own art\u00adworks and films, Ottinger resur\u00adrects the old Saint-Germain- des-Pr\u00e9s and Latin Quarter, with their lite\u00adra\u00adry caf\u00e9s and jazz clubs, and revi\u00adsits encoun\u00adters with Jewish exi\u00adles, life with her artis\u00adtic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, the world\u00adviews of Parisian eth\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgists and phi\u00adlo- sophers, the poli\u00adti\u00adcal uphe\u00adavals of the Algerian War and May 1968, and the lega\u00adcy of the colo\u00adni\u00adal era. \u201cI fol\u00adlo\u00adwed the foot\u00ads\u00adteps of my hero\u00adi\u00adnes and heroes,\u201d Ottinger nar\u00adra\u00adtes. \u201cWherever I found them, they will appear in this film too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201e<\/span>In 1962, as a young artist, I came to live and work in Paris. That peri\u00adod until 1969, when I left the city, was not only one of the most for\u00adma\u00adti\u00adve for me, it was also an era of intellec\u00adtu\u00adal, poli\u00adti\u00adcal, and social uphe\u00adaval in modern histo\u00adry. The film PARIS<\/span> CALLIGRAMMES<\/span> com\u00adbi\u00adnes my per\u00adso\u00adnal memo\u00adries of the 1960s with a por\u00adtrait of the city and a social car\u00adto\u00adgra\u00adphy of the age. Like Guillaume Appolinaire\u2019s poet\u00adry coll\u00adec\u00adtion Calli- gram\u00admes: Po\u00e8mes de la paix et de la guer\u00adre (Cal- ligrams: Poems of Peace and War), I have given it the form of a fil\u00admic \u201cpic\u00adtu\u00adre-poem\u201d (cal\u00adli\u00adgram) in which the words and images, com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adted by lan\u00adguage, sound, and music, form a mosaic that emer\u00adges from the viva\u00adci\u00adty of tho\u00adse exci\u00adting years while spea\u00adking to the fra\u00adgi\u00adli\u00adty of all cul\u00adtu\u00adral and poli\u00adti\u00adcal achie\u00adve\u00adments. The Ariadne thread through the film is a walk across Paris with many stops whe\u00adre topics are rai\u00adsed out of any chro\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal order. In the tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon of the fl\u00e2\u00adneur, I visit focal points in the city that were meaningful to me per\u00adso\u00adnal\u00adly and to the sto\u00adry of the 1960s, sites whe\u00adre signi\u00adfi\u00adcant poli\u00adti\u00adcal events tran\u00adspi\u00adred, important cul\u00adtu\u00adral and artis\u00adtic encoun\u00adters occur\u00adred, and new com\u00admu\u00adnal ways of life evol\u00adved. Not only was Paris in that time a \u201cmel\u00adting pot\u201d of intellec\u00adtu\u00adals and artists from all over the world, it was also under\u00adgo\u00ading the dif\u00adfi\u00adcult poli\u00adti\u00adcal era of deco\u00adlo\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon. The War in Algeria, and later the Vietnam War, over-shadowed the peri\u00adod of rea\u00adwa\u00adke\u00adning after the Second World War and brought peo\u00adp\u00adle from the colo\u00adnies and poli\u00adti\u00adcal con\u00adflicts into the capi\u00adtal.
