Robby M\u00fcller (1940\u20132018) was a lumi\u00adna\u00adry, but not in the way this term is com\u00admon\u00adly used. He could easi\u00adly have play\u00aded one of the wise and taci\u00adturn Indians in Jim Jarmusch\u2019s Acid Western \u201cDead Man\u201d. But that was impos\u00adsi\u00adble becau\u00adse he was the DOP<\/span> of this film, for which he con\u00adju\u00adred his spe\u00adcial, firm and almost pain\u00adter\u00adly, but also trans\u00adpa\u00adrent and shim\u00adme\u00adring light onto the screen, as he did for around 70 other mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adces of inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal auteur cinema.<\/p>\n

Over deca\u00addes the cine\u00adma\u00adto\u00adgrapher kept a video dia\u00adry which the film\u00adma\u00adker Claire Pijman alre\u00ada\u00addy work\u00aded with for the gre\u00adat exhi\u00adbi\u00adti\u00adon \u201cMaster of Light\u201d at the Amsterdam EYE<\/span> Film Museum and which she now uses as the cen\u00adtral pool of images for her own film, \u201cLiving the Light\u201d. Fellow cine\u00adma\u00adto\u00adgrapher Agn\u00e8s Godard says about a sequence bet\u00adween Dennis Hopper and Nicholas Ray from Wim Wenders\u2019 \u201cThe American Friend\u201d that mas\u00adter\u00adship for her is achie\u00adved only when the gran\u00addeur of the cine\u00adma\u00adto\u00adgra\u00adphy makes its\u00adelf vanish from a sce\u00adne becau\u00adse it beco\u00admes its natu\u00adral com\u00adpo\u00adnent. Strange that one always feels that one can almost hear Robby M\u00fcller\u2019s images. In \u201cLiving the Light\u201d, this impres\u00adsi\u00adon is under\u00adli\u00adned by deli\u00adca\u00adte\u00adly impro\u00advi\u00adsed sound\u00adscapes by Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan.<\/p>\n
