In the ear\u00adly 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, a group of young slaves is brought to Europe. Among them is a 10-year-old boy whom a mar\u00adchio\u00adness sel\u00adects to be an object of stu\u00addy. Given the name Angelo, he recei\u00adves a com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsi\u00adve edu\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon in lan\u00adguages and music and is pas\u00adsed around from Messina to Vienna as an exo\u00adtic but Europeanized valet. Only Magdalena regards him as more than a deco\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve exhi\u00adbi\u00adti\u00adon pie\u00adce. Following his high\u00adly acclai\u00admed fea\u00adture-film debut MICHAEL<\/span> (2011), Austrian direc\u00adtor Markus Schleinzer traces the true sto\u00adry of Angelo Soliman in well-com\u00adpo\u00adsed tableaux vivants. This peri\u00adod film was shot in the clas\u00adsic 4:3 aspect ratio, cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00adding to Angelo\u2019s nar\u00adro\u00adwed per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve of being put on dis\u00adplay. The results are powerful imagery and an evo\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve film that exami\u00adnes the exces\u00adses of colo\u00adnia\u00adlism both in their his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal con\u00adtext and in the pre\u00adsent day.<\/p>\n
