\u2018<\/span>We\u2019re wai\u00adting to grow old\u2019. This sen\u00adtence brief\u00adly sums up Yaoyun and his wife Liyun\u2019s bit\u00adter rea\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon about their lives. They were once a hap\u00adpy fami\u00adly \u2013 until their son drow\u00adned play\u00ading by a reser\u00advoir. And so Yaojun and Liyun lea\u00adve their home and plun\u00adge into the big city, alt\u00adhough nobo\u00addy knows them the\u00adre and they can\u00adnot even under\u00adstand the local dialect. Their adopted son Liu Xing does not offer them the com\u00adfort they had hoped for eit\u00adher. Defiantly rejec\u00adting his \u2018for\u00adeign\u2019 par\u00adents, he one day dis\u00adap\u00adpears altog\u00ade\u00adther. The mar\u00adried cou\u00adple are repea\u00adted\u00adly enmes\u00adhed in their memo\u00adries. Finally, they deci\u00adde to return to the site of their lost hopes.
\nIn this fami\u00adly saga span\u00adning three deca\u00addes of Chinese histo\u00adry, the pri\u00adva\u00adte and the poli\u00adti\u00adcal mer\u00adge and the indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal gets caught up in the gears of a socie\u00adty in the throes of con\u00adstant chan\u00adge. Part melo\u00addra\u00adma, part cri\u00adtique of the times, this film takes us from the country\u2019s uphe\u00adaval in the 1980s fol\u00adlo\u00adwing the Cultural Revolution to the pro\u00adspe\u00adring tur\u00adbo-capi\u00adta\u00adlism of the pre\u00adsent day. Told in swee\u00adping tableaux, it makes visi\u00adble the deep scars that lie beneath the sur\u00adface of an osten\u00adsi\u00adbly unbro\u00adken suc\u00adcess story.<\/p>\n
