Clara arri\u00adves in win\u00adtry New York with her two sons on the back seat of her car. The jour\u00adney, which she has dis\u00adgu\u00adi\u00adsed as an adven\u00adture for her children\u2019s sake, is soon reve\u00ada\u00adled to be an escape from an abu\u00adsi\u00adve hus\u00adband and father. He is a cop, and Clara is despera\u00adte\u00adly try\u00ading to elude his attempts to pur\u00adsue her. The three have litt\u00adle more than their car, and when this is towed away, they are left pen\u00adni\u00adless on the street. But the big cold city shows mer\u00adcy: in their search for refu\u00adge, the fami\u00adly meets a sel\u00adfless nur\u00adse named Alice who arran\u00adges beds for them at an emer\u00adgen\u00adcy shel\u00adter. While ste\u00adal\u00ading food at a Russian restau\u00adrant cal\u00adled \u2018Winter Palace\u2019, Clara meets an ex-con, Marc, who has been given the chan\u00adce to help the old eatery regain its for\u00admer glo\u00adry. The \u2018Winter Palace\u2019 soon beco\u00admes a place of unex\u00adpec\u00adted encoun\u00adters bet\u00adween peo\u00adp\u00adle who are all under\u00adgo\u00ading some sort of cri\u00adsis and whom fate has now brought tog\u00ade\u00adther. With a keen eye for cha\u00adrac\u00adter, Lone Scherfig explo\u00adres human beha\u00adviour in extre\u00adme con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons. She depicts the harsh\u00adness of life in the urban jungle, but she also demons\u00adtra\u00adtes what can grow when stran\u00adgers approach each other in fri\u00adend\u00adship and with an open heart.<\/p>\n
