Sophie and Georg meet and fall in love just after the hea\u00advi\u00adly-pregnant Sophie has been aban\u00addo\u00adned by her boy\u00adfri\u00adend. To the new\u00adly born Jakob, Georg natu\u00adral\u00adly beco\u00admes his father. The patch\u00adwork fami\u00adly faces all the usu\u00adal chal\u00adlenges that beset modern par\u00adents: who should be allo\u00adwed to work and who should take care of the child? How much free\u00addom is per\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adble and how much self-sacri\u00adfice requi\u00adred? And whe\u00adre is the room for pas\u00adsi\u00adon? A few years later, Georg and Sophie have split up. Jakob is six years old and his par\u00adents are grim\u00adly batt\u00adling for cus\u00adt\u00adody. Sophie\u2019s new part\u00adner, of all peo\u00adp\u00adle, tri\u00ades to media\u00adte bet\u00adween them. Played out in a series of indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal sce\u00adnes that all take place out\u00adside the same front door in Berlin, the film is an ellip\u00adti\u00adcal por\u00adtrait of a fami\u00adly for whom the term \u201apatch\u00adwork\u2018 is sim\u00adply a part of their ever\u00ady\u00adday lives. The prot\u00adago\u00adnists nego\u00adtia\u00adte their anxie\u00adties and desi\u00adres in front of house walls, in-bet\u00adween pil\u00adlars and in car parks.
