Following the cri\u00adti\u00adcal and com\u00admer\u00adcial fail\u00adure of her bio\u00adgra\u00adphy of Est\u00e9e Lauder<\/a>, aut\u00adhor Lee Israel<\/a> strug\u00adgles with finan\u00adcial trou\u00adbles, wri\u00adter\u2019s block<\/a> and alco\u00adho\u00adlism. With her agent unable to secu\u00adre her an advan\u00adce<\/a> for a new bio\u00adgra\u00adphy, Israel is forced to sell her pos\u00adses\u00adsi\u00adons to cover her expen\u00adses; she sells a per\u00adso\u00adnal let\u00adter she recei\u00adved from Katharine Hepburn<\/a> to Anna, a local book dealer.
\nWhile con\u00adduc\u00adting rese\u00adarch for a novel about Fanny Brice<\/a>, Israel hap\u00adpens upon a let\u00adter from Brice fold\u00aded in a book, which she takes and offers to sell to Anna. She offers Israel a low pri\u00adce due to the let\u00adter\u2019s lack of inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading con\u00adtent. Israel beg\u00adins to for\u00adge and sell let\u00adters by decea\u00adsed wri\u00adters, play\u00adw\u00adrights, and actors, lacing them with inti\u00adma\u00adte details to com\u00admand a hig\u00adher pri\u00adce. Anna, who is a fan of Israel\u2019s own wri\u00adting, attempts to initia\u00adte a roman\u00adtic rela\u00adti\u00adonship with her, but is rebuffed.
\nWhen one of Israel\u2019s let\u00adters writ\u00adten by No\u00ebl Coward<\/a> rai\u00adses sus\u00adpi\u00adci\u00adon for its unguard\u00aded dis\u00adcus\u00adsion of his sexua\u00adli\u00adty, she is black\u00adlis\u00adted by her buy\u00aders. Unable to sell the for\u00adge\u00adries hers\u00adelf, she has her fri\u00adend Jack Hock sell the let\u00adters for her, and later ste\u00adals authen\u00adtic let\u00adters from libra\u00adry archi\u00adves to sell. After her cat dies under Jack\u2019s care during one such theft, Israel ends their fri\u00adend\u00adship, but con\u00adti\u00adnues their part\u00adner\u00adship out of necessity.
\nJack is caught by the FBI<\/span><\/a> during a sale who, with Jack\u2019s coope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon, ser\u00adve Israel with a court sum\u00admons for for\u00adgery. She reta\u00adins a lawy\u00ader, who advi\u00adses her to show con\u00adtri\u00adti\u00adon by get\u00adting a job, doing com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty ser\u00advice, and joi\u00adning Alcoholics Anonymous<\/a>. In court, Israel con\u00adfes\u00adses that she enjoy\u00aded making the for\u00adge\u00adries and does not reg\u00adret her actions, but that her cri\u00admes were not worth it becau\u00adse the let\u00adters do not show her true self as a wri\u00adter. She is sen\u00adten\u00adced to five years of pro\u00adba\u00adti\u00adon<\/a> and six months of house arrest<\/a>.
\nSometime later, Israel recon\u00adci\u00adles with Jack \u2013 who is now dying of AIDS<\/span><\/a> \u2013 and asks his per\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adon to wri\u00adte a memoir about their for\u00adge\u00adries, to which he agrees. She pas\u00adses a store win\u00addow and sees a let\u00adter she for\u00adged by Dorothy Parker<\/a> on sale for $1,900. Disgusted, she wri\u00adtes the store owner a sar\u00adca\u00adstic let\u00adter from the decea\u00adsed \u201eDorothy Parker\u201d. Realizing the let\u00adter is a fake, the owner goes to remo\u00adve it, but places it back whe\u00adre it was after rea\u00adding it.
